Powder Mill Trail - Buckeye Trail & river crossings - Big Hole Rock Trail

Another lovely Sunday afternoon ride

Took the Buckeye Trail down to the river. We found the crossing on June 13, so now we can do the whole loop.

Looking up river

First, you cross this little river onto an island (photo taken from the island looking back to the trail.

Then you take this real rocky "trail" through the bushes to the other end of the island

River on the other side of the island

Cool reflections

Rocky trail runs the length of the island - all of this is underwater when the river rises during the winter rains

Bella doesn't like walking on the river rocks on this trail

At the end of the island, the trail splits. This is what it looks like to the left.

This is what it looks like to the right, and this is where we step off into the river.

and go around the point of the island

and then diagonally across the river

and eventually find the trail on the other side (not shown in this photo - looking downriver from the trail after crossing the river).

Here's where the trail picks up and a good reason why we wear a safety helmet: low branches are a common hazard

And this is the next river crossing: from the Buckeye Trail on one side of the river to the Big Hole Rock Trail on the other side.

Big Hole Rock Trail head

This trail parallels the river for about 200 feet and it's real rocky footing. A fallen tree blocks the trail and we have to walk on the bigger rocks around it.

Bella just hates walking on these rocks. We go real slow.

Nice wild flowers growing along the river bank

Finally the trail goes uphill from the river.

Nice scraggly tree trunk up about 100 feet from the river

Deep woods on the Big Hole Rock Trail
Take this trail back to Rincon Trail to Ridge Trail to the Observation Deck to Pine Trail to Powder Mill Trail to Graham Hill Trail back to the showgrounds. Round trip time: about 2 hours, combining walking, trotting (at a good clip) and loping.
