Howe on Union
From: UncleEggsy@aol.com - April 3This might get some discussion going. This link to a new interview with Jimmy Haun, Yes' "ghost" guitarist on Union, was posted on AMY. Apparently, Steve Howe is only slightly better represented on the album than Rick Wakeman.

Yes Music Circle 2001.04.05
From: Tizwin Hay [tizwin@progress.freeserve.co.uk] April 4Yes Music Circle supporters club e-bulletin, April 5, 2001
Jon Anderson has contacted me ~ here is the part for sharing with you!
"Everyone is going to fall in love with the new album!"
Currently, Yes are completing backing tracks for the new studio CD.
Assisting with production duties is Tim Wiedner, collaborator with Seal.
Did you know over 65% of all reported BBC national radio airings for music
on "The Ladder" were dedicated to "members of The Yes Music Circle"?
Perhaps the new studio CD will do even better!YesSymphonic is the title for the tour now being booked for the United
States, starting this coming July. Yes aim to perform, along with an
orchestra local to each area. Keyboard player Igor Khoroshev has moved on
to other projects, but may be associated with Yes in the future. Gig Guide
is at YW, currently comprising shows in CA (Kelseyville, Hollywood &
Concord) and MN (Minneapolis).Yescapade 2001, a gathering of and by Yes fans, is scheduled to get together
at Konocti Harbor in Clear Lake, California, on July 28. Further info at
http://www.yescapade.com If you leave a message in their
Guestbook, please write "I'm a Yes Music Circle member", next to your name. It's possible Yes may subsequently take YesSymphonic to Europe. Undoubtedly
Europe has some fine orchestras. A highly successful American tour would
bode well for Yessex, Yespania, and so on! ;-)Meanwhile, Jon Anderson has affirmed to me an interest in the possibility of
Yes being involved with a benefit concert being considered for England in
support of farmers suffering as a result of the current Foot-and-Mouth
disease crisis. Long-term Glastonbury Festival organiser (& farmer) Michael
Eavis has the seed of an idea for an event, possibly to be staged this
September at the Royal Bath & West Show Ground in Shepton Mallet in
Somerset. I for one can imagine Jon's between-song recollections about (1)
his schoolboy farm work; and (2) farm-sets brought into the studio when
recording "Topographic Oceans"! Do you think Yes would be highly suitable
for Farm Aid 2001? If so, why? If not, why?! As usual, consensus opinion
will be helpful.News to come (when we hear the music) of Steve Howe's forthcoming new solo
CD. The new Asia CD includes 2 tracks for which he contributed electric and
acoustic guitars. Several years ago I put Steve in touch with Oliver
Wakeman. Mr Howe is executive producer for Oliver's imminent CD "The 3 Ages
of Magick". Again, further info when we hear the music…UK-based YMC members currently are able to see Rick Wakeman on tour with
opera singer Ramon Remedios.I'm revamping our website ProgressForum. Top priority is to publish reviews
& comments regarding stock of CDs, videos & rare singles in the most
plentiful supply on our Merchandise Clearance Sale list. (Capital tied-up in
this is much needed!)http://www.geocities.com/progressforum/2comment.html is the full list (in
descending priority) of items for which I seek comments - or additional
comments! If you feel inspired, anytime in coming weeks, it would be great
to receive your opinion (even if only 2 - 3 sentences) regarding any of the
items listed. The most interesting will be added online.Next project will be revamping the paper-based independent magazines…!

Larry Fast / Yes connection
From: Roy DeRousse [roylayer@yahoo.com] - April 15Larry Fast talks about his connection with London at http://www.go4mylondon.co.uk/index.php3?topic=larry_fast
"I was fortunate enough during that summer to make a number of connections with people in the British recording industry, some of whom I'm still in working with today. Part of it was my own knocking on doors, and some was through connections I had already established. I must acknowledge a few introductory phone calls that Rick Wakeman made on my behalf that summer. A year earlier, Rick had commissioned me to build him one of my early and primitive, squawky, special function synthesizers for him. Visiting Rick and Yes, and producer/engineer Eddie Offord in the studio that summer gave me further insights into the career I was trying to build. Those phone calls opened a few industry doors which led directly to my first recording contract (ironically back in the States) and everything else that grew from that."
It's an interesting article. Check out the rest of it. Other prog folks like Wakeman and Levin also have brief articles there that are worth checking out. You can also register to win a prize if you wish.

From: Tim Stupid Frog [stupidfrog1@hotmail.com] April 19To all who might be interested....a friend of mine found a couple of pictures he took of Alan White in his archive. They are from Maui in 1984. I have a link on my index page if anyone would like to take a look. http://www.stupidfrog.com
MP3 - listen for a good laugh
From: Guillermo [gsabanes@yahoo.com.ar] - April 17http://www.icsnet.com/~boo/ELP-DISC/FaithfulAxe.mp3
Pointed out by a member of anther list, here I found a short snippet of a song by Mike Keneally in imitation of a truly Yes/Relayer style. Can't tell if he's mocking, making fun or what, but song, lyrics, guitars, backing vocals, bass... I couldn't stop laughing all the way through.
Igor's Baby
From: Robin Kauffman [rkauff7777] - April 24I was asked to pass this along to any of Igor's fans out there. Igor and his wife Randi had a baby girl yesterday (April 23.) Her name is Lucia Bell (don't know if the spellings are correct.) She was about 7 pounds and 21 inches long.
Peter Banks Update
From: Gary Brown [GBrown8287@aol.com] - April 24Hey Gang, Due to keeping busy, I'm missing a lot of posts on here. Still, I do check in from time to time. So, hi to all...and I wish everyone is doing well.
One of the things that I got myself involved in is trying to help Peter Banks get some Internet coverage. Let's just say he's lacking compared to all the other ex-Yes members ( Tony ? ). Because of that, and also from being friends with Billy James (the author of the up and coming book about Peter), I am happy to announce the birth of an idea; The Official Peter Banks Mailing List / Website. Everything is still in the planning stages, but should be up and running pretty soon.
The mailing list is going to be in a newsletter format. The website will be designed to compliment it. At this point I'm getting messages to Peter through Billy. So I'm told Peter likes the idea very much.
[snip] I am asking your help (the true Yes experts) in answering a few questions for me:
1. How much of Peters involvement with Yes would you like to see covered.
2. What subjects would you like information on:
a = His pre-Yes days.
b = his involvement with other bands besides Yes.
c = his solo recordings.
d = personal info; birthday, influences, equipment used, what's going on now, ect...
e = all of the above.3. Do you feel that a site is long over do on Peter, and would you support it by being a member?
That's it for now. I guess I'm trying to figure out what direction to go with this. A head of time....thanks for your help. I'll keep you posted as things are progressing.
Phil Ehart on playing with orchestras
From: Mark Sink [erasearise@yahoo.com] - April 24
But here's the good news: As conceited as a lot of them acted, they couldn't play the arrangements and couldn't keep up with the time signatures! They couldn't keep up with the Kansas material. Our guys said, ' if you think you're better than we are, at least try to play the arrangements.' We actually had to take the arrangements scored for the London Symphony Orchestra and 'dumb them down' for the other orchestras. We tried to take the high road. Most of the people in the orchestras were very nice. There were two kinds of orchestras - the subscription orchestras that would play every night, and then pickup orchestras that would volunteer to play with Kansas. Those pickup orchestras were great, because they volunteered to do it.
I remember working with the Kansas City Symphony. We almost stopped in the middle of our show and dismissed them because they were so bad - so off and so snotty. In the afternoon they didn't want to rehearse, they just wanted to go off and sit on the stage. We are about two seconds away from telling Larry (Baird who, as Larry Groupé is doing with Yes, both orchestrated the music and conducted on tour) to wave off the orchestra and finish without them. There is a certain faction of the 'tuxedo wearers' with an attitude. Ninety percent of it was a lot of fun. (unquote) If I'm understanding what he meant about 'two kinds of orchestras' his experience seems to differ from what some here have indicated. He seems to be saying that it was the regular subsets of larger orchestras that didn't work out well, that many of these players were too disdainful to even approach the job in a professional manner.
