.....is on the shelves. Led Zep are on the cover - not The Rolling Stones as I previously advised. The CD is a sampler w/13 tracks, including Yes, Spock's Beard, Hawkwind + others. It is full 9 minute version of "Homeworld". The editorial says that although they slagged off "OYE" this sounds more like "Close to the Edge", and Classic Rock seem to like it. They also had a readers poll, for the best single of all time. Both
"Wondrous Stories" and "Owner" made it to the Top 100. :~O They also say that Yes and ELP will tour Europe and USA later this year.

I haven't heard much mention of this one. It's called "Encores, Legends, & Paradox". I just found it today and gave it a listen. In a word: WOW. These guys went beyond ELP while remaining faithful and capturing the
spirit of the originals. There's quite a bit of "artistic license", but Keith himself has given the project a major thumbs up in the liner notes.
Contributions by Yes men: Peter Banks plays guitar on "Toccata" (but if he's there, he's in the background) and
on "The Sheriff", where he turns in quite a nice (but all too short) solo, showing he hasn't loat any agility.
Geoff Downes chimes in with a lead synth solo on the outro of "The Barbarian". It's good, and tasteful, but nothing really earth shattering.
Igor... whoa. He turns in a couple of piano solos on Bitches Crystal that have a definite be-bop jazz flavor. This guy is much more versatile than I thought! Then he plays all the keyboards in "The Barbarian". After
hearing that (twice now), I would "Venture" to say that his talents were under-utilised on the OYE tour. I'm not joking! This guy is really a team player and is probably the most versatile keyboardist Yes has ever had.
I can't leave without mentioning Jordan Rudess's take on Karn Evil 9 1st Impression, done with Simon Phillips and Robert Berry. Let's just say that I'm still picking my jaw up off the floor. I saw him warm up for Dream Theater a few years ago with Rod Morgenstein. They were a duo who sounded like an entire band. I believe
he toured with the Dregs after T Lavitz begged off. He currently plays in Liquid Tension Experiment and Dream Theater. I have his first solo album "Listen" also. If Yes had picked up Jordan after Rick had left, I'm serious, there would be no debate as to who the best Yes keyboardist would be. It never would have worked though. I think he have dominated the band's direction, he's that powerful of a presence. He'll fit in well with Dream Theater.
I recommend the CD highly if you can find it. It's nice to hear Igor outside of covering Yes (even if it is covering ELP!)

I just got this note from a friend:
Hey, I have some big Yes news!!! I found all this out last night. On Thurs., Will Alexander (Emerson's keyboard tech) got a call from Igor Korochev asking him if he would like to do the keys for the upcoming Yes tour. Will jumped at it because ELP is not at all happening now. This what Igor told him: the band is all meeting in L.A. the weekend to begin rehearsals. The will be rehearsing at a studio in N. Hollywood. The 1st shows are from 9/2-9/15 starting in Santiago, Chile and ending in Mexico City. Then they come back to L.A. for more rehearsals. The US Tour runs from 10/10-12-/10. They have a couple of weeks off an they are booked to play in Philadelphia on New Year's Eve! Right after that, they go Europe in Jan. Feb & Mar. The US Tour will resume in Apr. 2000. The word is, is that they will be playing a lot of smaller venues with like 1200-1400 seats.....that's the full scoop...
The first 'teaser' ad (a quarter page) for 'The Ladder' appears in the September edition of Mojo.
In addition to the 'Yes in a box' logo, there is yet another font used for the word 'Yes' above the Dean script we already know for 'The Ladder'. Irritating and inconsistent branding, imo.
Worst of all they appear to have made a mistake with the release date. It states 20/10/99, which, even if there were more slippage, cannot be right - it isn't a Monday (new album release day in the UK). Having said that, my local high street chain still hasn't got an official release date. Is there a definitive statement?
The ad also contains the legend 'A TRUE RETURN TO FORM' .
I urge all Steve Howe fans to go to [Ed Schaum's] site at http://yesguitar.home.att.net/ where you can download Ed's own versions of 'Clap' and 'Mood for a Day'. They are full versions in mp3 format. Also there's an excerpt from 'Ancient'.
Ed Schaum is soon to release Millennium Guitar' which contains several of Steve Howe' guitar pieces and compositions, and I'm sure a lot of other great guitar music. There's a medley from the Millennium Guitar' album as well for downloading.
Guitarists, and Steve Howe fans, let me know what you think!
Also there's a pretty nice review of 'The Ladder', and other interesting Yesstuff.
This URL talks about how movie soundtracks have now become very popular.
About half way down the page they review the "Outside Providence" movie soundtrack and mention Yes. This movie may turn a new generation onto Yes music or some of the other 70's bands in the film.
[Tiz previously wrote: ">UK-based Southsiders - Bob Harris will tonight (Saturday) be airing _It Will Be A Good Day (The River)_ from the forthcoming Yes album. The show is on BBC Radio Two, right across the UK + into Germany and beyond, around 88.8 FM (Saturdays, 10.00pm - 1.00am)."
Here is the transcription [from the radio broadcast]:
Broadcast on BBC Radio Two, by Bob Harris, Aug 14, 1999:
Bob back-announced: "Well, the album is due for release at the end of September, and the band are due to tour early next year. The album _The Ladder_; that's Yes, of course, and the song was called _It'll Be A Good Day_. The current line-up of the band ~ 'cos the politics of this band are really something to behold ~ Jon Anderson, Steve, Howe, Billy Sherwood, Chris Squire, Alan White and Igor Khoroshev on keyboards and vocals. And the album is going to be released in England on the Eagle record label. And I must just link a couple of emails to this one, too. One from Jan Carol who's emailed in from the USA. She says, 'Dear Bob, I was delighted to visit your country, earlier this year, and eagerly await the opportunity to return. I love the country...' And Elinor in Leeds says: 'Could you please
play a track, Bob; or one of the tracks anyway; from the forthcoming Yes album _The Ladder_ and dedicate it to a very special lady, Tiz Hay, tireless promoter of Yes and founder of The Yes Music Circle.' Well it's a great pleasure to do that. I've known Tiz for many years. Hope your're listening tonight, Tiz; hope you're enjoying the programme. And Elinor, many, many thanks for the email. bob.harris@bbc.co.uk is my email address."
Incidentally, Bob Harris has YesWorld on the Links page of his website, and a temporary link to our Progressive Maze website regarding the 1 track-airing of this weekend.
Our Progressive Maze website now has added [additional] South American tour dates for the 1999 Yes tour (as follows). Yes management have asked us to point out these may be subject to change + more dates will be added to the schedule...and the Progressive Maze website.

Saturday, my family of four left the sticks to venture to the big city for back to school supplies and nothing would suit the eldest daughter but that we go see the movie "Dick", which is a hilarious movie about Watergate. At the pivotal, climatic moment of the movie, we all jump out of our seats as we here Jon singing, "I've Seen all Good People." And I don't mean just
for 10 or 20 seconds. They played almost the whole song and it was a live version cause I could barely hear "All we're saying is give peace a chance." It was great and the lyrics seemed to tie in to the scene nicely.... such as " is captured." and "don't surround yourself with yourself." They really grabbed you. Of course I missed some of the dialogue as I was listening to
Yes, but I do know how that story turned out. [VBSEG]
Yes Discusses Producer's Death
Yes singer Jon Anderson has the distinction of being the one who found Fairbairn dead at his home in Vancouver, B.C. Anderson says the group became concerned when the always punctual Fairbairn missed a session, so he and two of the studio staff decided to go to the producer's home to see what was wrong.
"We thought maybe he hadn't slept all night, and he was still asleep, but it wasn't the case," says Anderson. "That was a very sad moment, of course. His spirit was still around; he was coming through saying where he was, in heaven. He'd gone into the light, but his spirit was still around and seemed to stay around while we were still working on it. There wasn't that, 'Oh, we've got to give up the album because of this.' It was like, 'No, we've got
to keep going.' Even the engineer, Mike Plotnikoff, who was brilliant, said, 'I think I just need a day off. I want to get back onto this album,' because we were so close to finishing it."
Yes will hit the road in South America next month, shortly before The Ladder's release, and plans to start a North American tour in October. The group plans to play a New Year's Eve show in Philadelphia. - Gary Graff
Not sure if you remember, but last week I mailed about the local classic rock radio station featuring first ELP and then Yes in their Classic CD at midnight slot, well this week they've gone one better and have announced a Yes contest.

Howe's brief liner notes explain that he's been a Bob Dylan fan since the early 1960s (he even named his son, this album's drummer, for the man). Behind a procession of different singers, Howe's playing invokes so many different ages of Dylan that his enthusiasm is not only contagious, it's educational.
Anderson handles just the one vocal; elsewhere, PP Arnold, Phoebe Snow, Annie Haslam (of Renaissance), and Howe himself weigh in, while there's also a reunion with the guitarist's old bandmate from 1960s legend Tomorrow, Keith West. He turns in a "Lay Lady Lay," which ranks alongside a psychotic blues version of "Going Going Gone" (and, of course, "Sad Eyed Lady") amongst the album's highlights. But the real star is Howe, for his playing, for some
genuinely inspired rearrangements, and for making the whole thing work in the first place. Lots of people have made albums of Dylan covers. Not many have made good ones. -- Dave Thompson

Yes Discusses Producer's Death
The following interview is on the Wall of Sound website.
The members of Yes are certainly ebullient about their new album, The Ladder, which is due in stores Sept. 25. But the record is tinged with a certain sadness, as it's marked by the passing of producer Bruce Fairbairn, who died of a heart attack last spring while he and the band were mixing the album in Vancouver.
"It was most peculiar," recalls bassist Chris Squier. "He was the last person I could ever have foretold passing on, really. If you'd asked me a few days before, did I think Bruce was not going to be with us, I would've thought you were crazy because he seemed like he was in the peak of health and everything. It was a sad loss, and I hope we've done justice to his memory, really."
Win "The Ladder" before its release radio contest
From Keith Huet [Keith.Huet@COMPAQ.com] - Aug 17
Yes is coming out with a new album - "The Ladder" - and we're doing a deal with them to have you win a copy before you can buy it! Beginning Monday, go to "Contests" on the website to register...but - and hey, this is cool - you can get a Liquid Audio download of a clip from one of the songs on the CD...they call it a "Digital Audio Postcard" Check it out! And make sure
your speakers aren't up too loud, 'cause the music starts on it's own. Having a Yes song blast out of your speakers is a good way to make your boss wonder exactly what it is you're doing on your computer. One excuse that works for me - (spoken rather loudly) "Dang computer! Let's get an engineer in here! I can't figure out what it's doing!! Must be a virus or something!" You can register starting Monday, or you can go get the DAP from here by following the following...huh? http://www.fanmaildirect.com/d.asp?i=&e=lightning_strikes.exe&p=yes-KKRW.
CDNow review of Steves Dylan thing
The most remarkable thing about this record is how much it does -- and doesn't -- sound like Yes. On the one hand, any album which unites guitarist Howe and singer Jon Anderson is going to draw a few comparisons, but you're two minutes into the opening "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" before Anderson even threatens the vocal tones for which he's renowned. At the same time, Howe has his hand in so many instrumental pies that there's no time to
retread old ground.
