This was fowarded to me... sounds interesting!

28th November Oliver Wakeman attended yesterday's Classic Rock Society Awards night, a very memorable evening for all those interested in Classic Rock. The awards were handed out to the victors by Steve Hackett of Genesis fame. Peter Banks was also there and a few photos of the three were taken, which we hope to reproduce on this site soon. Oliver was asked to accept the award for 'Best Drummer' on behalf of Nick D'Vigilio of the rock band 'Spock's Beard', who was unable to attend as he lives in America! The evening finished on a highlight of Steve Hackett taking to the stage for an impromptu blues performance with Peter Banks on bass.
Oliver did very well at the awards, being nominated for 'Best Keyboard Player'. (He came 8th out of about 60!). 'Jabberwocky' was voted '11th Best Album of the Year' and the 'Heaven's Isle' re-release was voted '22nd Best Album of the Year'. Oliver wishes to express his thanks to all the people who voted for him and his music.
27th November Oliver will be at the Classic Rock Society's Awards Night at the Oakwood Theatre, Rotherham. Hopefully some of the other musicians from Jabberwocky will also be there... If you manage to pick Oliver out of the crowd, go and tug his hair, say 'hello' and tell him how much you like his web site!

I recently found a NTSC copy of "The Word and The Gospels" video, which is wonderful!!!

The latest RWCC newsletter arrived last Saturday. It was rather grim reading again. Rick Sums it up "as probably the worst (year) since the early 1980's". I think this is a little harsh since Rick released Four Hand's with Mario. And Return. But I can understand his frustrations at not getting an Return dates to happen etc.
The Xmas album didn't make it again but there are two piano albums due early next year and another UK (ish) tour.
Rick is on Countdown again. The Quarter-finals through to the Grand Final. He must me starting today or tomorrow as the Grand final is Xmas day I think. Strange Mum and Dad haven't told me I am missing him yet.
He is on Generation game on Dec 24 6.05
And I Never Mind the Buzzcocks I guess 9.35 on 29 December. He is not a panelist though.
For any more info you will need to Subscribe to RWCC or what until this newsletter makes the RWCC site probably in six months time.

Thanks to Jon Hinchliffe for the welcome reminder about Rick's forthcoming television appearances during the festive period.
This Monday, I compiled and circulated a Yes Music Circle mailshot to subscribers who are waiting (patiently!) for our paper-based enthusiasts' magazine. An excerpt follows ~ I tracked down 4 Wakey television happenings!
4) Rick's Christmas '99 TV appearances :-
Wakeman enthusiasts are welcome to send YMC comments after seeing
Rick’s following festive-period TV appearances broadcast from England (+ via satellite) :
~ ‘Jim Davidson’s Generation Game’ (BBC1, Christmas Eve, 6.05pm)
~ ‘Countdown Grand Final’ (Channel 4, Christmas Day, 4.55pm)
~ ‘Never Mind The Buzzcocks’ brief appearance (BBC2, on 29th December, 9.35pm)
~ ‘A Night of 1000 Years’ (ITV, 30th December, 10pm)
Rick also recorded appearances for the quarter-finals and semi-final of Countdown. Full descriptions, please of the anecdotes + his flash ties! Please extend this invitation to any Wakey fans known to you! Each Monday at 7pm it may be a good idea to tune-in to the beginning of BBC1’s "This Is Your Life", as rumour has it the Wakemans make another appearance…!
Rick has recorded an interview (which may or may not be broadcast) for a programme about Ozzy Osborne (to be titled "This Is NOT Your Life") and another for a Top 10 series regarding Punk. Rick is also in the process of writing a novel…!
Listen out, in the new year, for BBC Radio 2’s second series of
Classic Albums, with Rick as narrator. Radio 2 is available across the UK (around 88–91 FM) and is now available world-wide via the ‘net at
Tizwin Hay
Stop Press ~ Tonight Rick is due to appear with Clive James on 'A Night of 1000 Years' (ITV, 10pm). It's been listed for the past fortnight at
[snip]
For those outside the broadcast range...dressed as Wizard Wakeman (gold cape, long silver wig and green cone), Rick performed along with comedian Bill Bailey, whilst celebrity contestants identified renditions from :
The Clash ~ London Calling
Somehow 'Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer' kept intercepting the Wakeman / Bailey renditions!

Let me forward you this message from Oldfield mailing list, some member there catched this event. Let see it from MO fans point of view :)

Comedy music quiz show 'Never Mind The Buzzcocks' used In Dulce Jubilo in the 'intros' round. It was played excrutiatingly badly by Rick Wakeman and Bill Bailey (a comedian/musician).
Phill Jupitus said 'It's that bloody awful Mike Oldfield thing, innit? Portsmouth'. One of the guests on the other team thought Mike Oldfield was a member of ABBA. (Though pleasingly was laughed at by the rest of the panelists, including the host who said sarcastically 'Yes, he was'.)
Memory serves me well enough to be able to transcribe most of the little bit of joke 'trivia' they say about the bands/musicians used in the 'intros' round (British people will know what I'm talking about here).
'Mike "Bender" Oldfield... (Laughter)... Mike Oldfield is agrophobic, claustrophobic and (something I've forgotten). He found this out when he was stuck in a ski-lift (large pause). Bender'
Before anyone gets 'ooh, they're being nasty about Mike', I ought to point out 'bender' was a running joke that got a cheap laugh every time it was mentioned. Anyway, it's a comedy quiz show and they're nasty about everyone, including really great musicians (like Mike, ahem). Oh and please, don't try and find out if Mike discovered he had those phobias when stuck in a ski-lift because, as anyone who ever saw the show would know, it's an obvious lie.
'Amusingly', Rick Wakeman and Bill Bailey played out the show with a crap version of In Dulce Jubilo and were welcomed back on as 'the new supergroup, Ski Lift Bender'.
Just thought I'd mention this little nugget of information. It may come in handy one day. Though I'm sure I don't know when.

Wizard Wakeman and Bill Bailey also performed their own unique rendition from :
Cream ~ Sunshine of Your Love...which confused the panellists!

Sweeet ~ Hell Raiser
Ram Jam ~ Black Betty
Duran, Duran ~ Save a Prayer
Mike Oldfield ~ In Dolci Jubilo
Okay, before you go getting all excited about the subject, Mike Himself wasn't on TV. He was just mentioned on TV. Which, let's face it, is even more of a rare occurence than him actually appearing on TV these days. Anyway...
