Patrick Moraz/Keyboard Top 25 From: Angela M. [gatecrasher_@yahoo.com] - Feb. 1

No, he's not on it, and I haven't seen the article, but I got this email from his publicist, maybe there are some other Moraz fans who might take interest in this:

Dear Angela: Patrick was left off the list of Keyboard magazine's Top 25 keyboardists. (See Keyboard, January 2000 issue) We are urging all PM fans to contact the magazine and let them know we think this is a huge mistake on their part. Especially seeing as artists such as Depeche Mode and Prince (!) were named to this Top 25 and that not too long ago, Keyboard named PM as one of the top five keyboardists ever. Patrick also went to great lengths to play for Keyboard's 20th Anniversary party five years ago.

Jim Atkin wrote the "25 Best" story; Greg Vail compiled the list. However, Greg Rule is the editor; our displeasure should be sent his way.

His phone: 650-358-9500
His fax: 650-358-9527
His e-mail: gregrule@mfi.com
Keyboard's e-mail address: Keyboard@mfi.com

I am calling, faxing and sending e-mails to both addresses. I hope you can do the same.

Patrick and Phyllis will really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Brian Kelleher, Publicist

Jon on "Reelin in the Years" From: Bruce Dietel [bdietel@us.oracle.com] - Feb. 2

I just recalled that the radio show 'reelin in the years', which I believe is nationally syndicated, announced this past week that next week they would have a talk with Jon.

Likely this is a previously recorded blurb about some classic track. This show is on Sunday mornings in NY on Q104. Its usually pretty good, offering a good mix of some good old diverse tunes. Highlight last week was a Stephen Stills version of Dear Mr. Fantasy. Q104 is also about the only NY metro station left that occasionally plays some Yes. It's also where Scott Muni landed after WNEW quit playing music.

New Releases available at The Artist Shop From: Gary Davis [artshop@artist-shop.com] - Feb. 3

The latest Artist Shop newsletter is out and you'll find it in its entirety at http://www.artist-shop.com/news.htm. Here are some excerpts of interest to Yes fans.

Let's start with forthcoming import releases which you'll find at http://www.artist-shop.com/catalog/imports/preorder.htm:

PETER LOCKETT & NETWORK OF SPARKS with BILL BRUFORD-ONE
New release featuring King Crimson percussionist.

And recently released imports http://www.artist-shop.com/catalog/imports/new.htm:

WAKEMAN,RICK-PRELUDES TO A CENTURY
2000 album from prog/art Rock artist. Former member of the Strawbs and Yes. 12 tracks, over an hour of music featuring Wakeman on a Steinway Concert Grand Piano.

YES-BEST OF 1970-1987
Compilation from successful prog rockers. 10 tracks including 'America', 'Heart of the Sunrise', 'Sound Chaser' and 'Owner of a Lonely Heart'.

And finally, here's something about which my import distributor only sent word out today. But I know you've all heard rumors about it, so even though I don't have it up on the website yet, I thought I should mention it right away.

YES-LADDER-TOUR EDITION +3 2CD $24.95
German tour version of '99 release with 2 extra live tracks 'Homeworld' and 'Ive Seen All Good People' and a video track 'Good People' on an extra disc.

Yes albums for (legal) download From: Rob [kudla@pobox.com] - Feb 4

I don't remember seeing this mentioned here - emusic.com has Beyond and Before and Keys 2 available for download. You have to buy the entire disc in each case for $9 a pop (each is available as two separate discs) and can download the files in mp3 format. If you do the math it's pretty obvious that this isn't a very good deal (18 bucks for double sets commonly available in physical form with art for around 16) and I've already got both of them anyway. Still, nice to see Yes doing this kind of thing especially given that the first two are still in print on a major label.

http://www.emusic.com/artists/4510

I found it while searching listen.com for progressive rock - I was hoping for some indie artists but the top 5 listed were Yes, Genesis (for Carpet Crawl 99), Tull, Kansas and for some reason Pete Townshend.

Yes in Dublin last night - SETLIST SPOILER From: brian_neeson@solectron.co.uk - Feb. 7

Just a short note to say that the set list is just about the same as it was on the American tour. It will be a Good Day and The Messenger have swapped positions - and Clap is included in the encores.

Jon announced that Chris's wife Melissa gave birth on Saturday to Baby Cameron. Chris - "I have been re-Daddyfied".

Steve looked much happier than he appeared in the Mid-west. Jon was wearing a "Jackson-esque" glove on his left hand for the first couple of numbers.

Yes' Birmingham Peformance Canceled From: Tizwin Hay [tizwin@progress.freeserve.co.uk] - Feb. 7

Sorry to be "the messenger" of disappointing news, but I have had confirmation from Birmingham Symphony Hall tonight's YES show has been cancelled because the band's equipment went to the wrong airport, today, following last night's show in Dublin.

I'm told the venue personnel will tomorrow be writing to ticket holders, offering a full refund, and enclosing a self-addressed stamped envelope for that purpose.

However, clearly there will be many fans who have travelled long distances by car or train. The telephone number I have been given for such people to seek reimbursement of travel expenses (+ accommodation?) is :

Customer Services, Birmingham Symphony Hall ~ 0121 6445198

Currently, I do not know precisely what equipment is still in transit. Possibly, if YES have (or could have borrowed) basic instruments, they + "The voice" could have performed an acoustic show, to the reasonable satisfaction of their eager audience. Maybe each ticket holder could have been given a low-value gift from the merchandise (a hat, for example). Sigh...!

Just as I was writing that, I heard from YES management "Acoustic performance would have still required portions of the gear". Apparently, it's been held up in inclement weather.

Regarding re-scheduling the gig, such a shame the venue has a symphony orchestra booked for this Wednesday, when YES have no gig planned. As there are no vacancies till late in 2000, I guess YES will just have to come back for what some people consider the *real* Millennium...& be sure to perform 'Turn of the Century'!

Meanwhile, YES aim to go ahead with their 2nd scheduled show at the Birmingham venue tomorrow (Tuesday).

I'll post further info, when received.

To help fans currently travelling between their place of work & the Birmingham venue, I've managed to get BBC Radio 2's Johnnie Walker to announce tonight's cancellation. Bless him, he even read out the venue telephone number in the event of people having questions! Here is for Southsiders (Booking Office) 0121 212 3333.

Asia / Roger Dean / Steve Howe From: Roy DeRousse [relayer@iname.com] - Feb. 7

From the Asia e-mail list:

Now for the news I've promised for a few days now. I've been given the go-ahead to let everyone know that Roger Dean has been confirmed to paint the new Asia album cover and to design a new logo for the band! It will certainly be a welcome return, as I've always felt that Roger always added a certain degree of class to the look of their albums in the past.

Not only that, but in addition to Ian Crichton, the welcome mat has been set out for Steve Howe to appear on the new record, if his committments to YES allow. Geoff told me that he hopes to see Steve on Friday night in Cardiff [at YES' concert] to discuss the matter. Given that YES' current tour itinerary only takes them to mid-March and the Asia album isn't due to be delivered to the label until April, there's plenty of time for him to make an appearance.

Speaking of Ian, I must be sure to clear something up. The only reason Ian will be re-recording his guitar parts for the early tracks is due to the fact that they were only recorded for demo purposes at the time. That was my own misunderstanding of the situation. I hope this clears up the matter.

AND, it is the intention of the new label and management to have even more special guests on the album. I've been promised all the details as they are confirmed and can be published.

Have a great night!

Jon on new Bela Fleck CD From: Mike LaFave [mlafave@remc7.k12.mi.us] - Feb. 14

This Tuesday I'll be seeing Bela Fleck and The Flecktones at a local college in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Well I read an article in sundays Grand Rapids Press and it has a Yes related mentionable.

Here's a portion of the transcript from an article on Bela Fleck and The Flecktones by John Sinkevics, date 2/13/00:

To Bela Fleck, there's still a whole world of banjo frontiers to explore. No matter that this jazz banjo pioneer already has won over legions of jazz traditionalists with his musicianship, turned on young rock fans while opening big arena shows in 1998 for The Dave Matthews Band and recorded a grammy-nominated bluegrass album last year with legends Earl Scruggs and Vasser Clements. By Thanksgiving 1999, Fleck and his Flecktones- after another tour and release of a greatest hits CD- were back in the studio (a.k.a., Fleck's Nashville home) producing more of the groundbreaking, wondrous music that's become their trademark.

This time around, they've tapped a host of unusual guest artists, from vocalists Shawn Colvin and Yes' Jon Anderson to string and horn sections, on a yet-to-be-named album coming out this summer.

"We're just basically going wild, having a great time," said Fleck, 41, who performs with the Flecktones Tuesday at Calvin College. "We try and make every recording different from the last one. On the last one ("Left of Cool"), the concept was just the band. This time, we're calling on a lot of friends."

From: Eggman947@aol.com - Feb. 21

Hi, yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a concert by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and after the show I had the chance to meet them. I decided to ake the opportunity to ask about Jon's rumored appearance on their next album. Bela told me that he went to Jon and he sings harmony on one song and some lead on another. He described it as a cameo. I'm definitely going to be looking forward to this, but it probably won't be released until this summer.

Back to all their golden Yes-terdays From: Nottingham Evening Post - Feb 17

YES, Royal Concert Hall [16th Feb 1999], Sean Hewitt

I CAME to bury Yes, not to praise them. Who needs these clapped-out old prog rockers?, I thought. (And I was thinking as a clapped out old ex-prog rock fan, in case you're wondering).

Just my bad luck, then, that Yes played a blinder.

Oh, there were moments which reminded you why the Sex Pistols were invented: twiddly-fiddly bits that sent the true believers into paroxysms of joy while the rest of us looked at our watches.

But old Jon Anderson's voice still cuts through the arpeggio-strewn soundscapes like sunshine through clouds, even if you can't even guess what he's singing about (I think it may be something cosmic, but couldn't really be any more specific). For two-and-a-quarter hours his band, meanwhile, displayed a determination not seen since the 1970s.

Man of the match: Chris Squire. The Chemical Brothers could easily earn a fortune remixing some of his singing bass lines. And, like Anderson, clearly from a parallel universe. Why else would he be standing on one leg, wearing a long white coat, shorts and bower boots and - at one hilarious moment simultaneously playing a triple-necked bass and sneakily downing a pint? (A sight that made me, at least, proud to be British).

Five songs from new album The Ladder went down a storm with the sold out crowd, but the highlight was the emotive Awaken (15 minutes long, but who's counting?).

As I shook Yes confetti from my jumper after its church-organ-and-harp driven climax, I recalled XTC's Dave Gregory once telling me that Steve Howe's solo on this was the reason he bought his first electric 12-string guitar.

It was a remark that overturned preconceptions.

Just like last night's show, in fact.

Yes + Tull From: Yescelt@aol.com - Feb 18

A source close to the band last night confirmed that Yes will tour with Tull in the summer in USA. They also said that they would be going to Japan and Australia in September.

I asked Steve Howe if he would be playing on the next Asia album. Steve told me that they hadn't invited him - but that he had heard the "rumour".

Q104 Radio Show From: BAD [bdietel@us.oracle.com] - Feb 19

I heard this morning on Q104 in NY an advertisement for part two of a YES special. They had a bit of an interview with Jon. It is to air on Sunday nite.(Missed the time) I can't find any detail on the Q104 website and I expect it is a syndicated show, prerecorded.

I'll pass along any other info if I hear it.

Yes Signing at HMV From: Donald Taylor [donald.taylor@virgin.net"@virgin.net] - Feb 21

Robin Prichard wrote:
"Don't forget Yes are doing an in store signing at HMV in Oxford Street at 12-30 on Sunday 20th. Any suggestion that Chris Squire will turn up late has already been denied by sources close to the band! Try and get along to support the lads."

I reckon there were 300-500 people queing for the signing alone plus another (like me) 50-100 people just there for the occasion. An excellent turn out. All 5 members entered the store from a back entrance at 12:45. A round of applause and cheering went up as the boys made there way to the pre-assembled stage - pity they did not play The Firebird Suite!!. A huge video screen behing the band was showing the Yesyears video and The Ladder was being played over the in store PA. There was an official film being recorded and many of the punters had cameras - so there should be a lot of photos coming out soon.

I left around 1.20 and the queue was still all the way from the stage, out the store, down Oxford street and up a side street. Nearby shop owners were complaining that the queues were affecting their business as customers could not get in because of the crowd. It will be interesting to know if these people still in the queue outside ever made it to the stage.

I have just returned from London where I saw Yes for the first time. It was an marvellous experience. I don`t want to give a review, because I think it would be to emotional at the moment. But I want to share two things which made the trip even more special:

On the Sunday show I brought the whole family (wife and three daughters, 12, 10 & 6 years) The middle one is already a devoted fan so she was standing with diamonds in her eyes the whole concert. The youngest fell asleep during Lighting Strikes and wake up when the confetti came, she enjoyed singing ISAGP, though. But even the oldest loved it, and she usually don`t like her fathers music at all. We had great seats, thanks to the the staff in Royal Albert Hall. Because I had misunderstood the web-ordering, we first got seats far away from the stage (back in the circle). I talked to a sweet old lady and told her about our long journey from Norway and how we where looking forward to the gig, and she gave us new seats in a lounge, on Steve Howes side of the stage.

Another beautiful experience was at the signing Yes did at HMV records. I had all three daughters with me in the line, and when we where almost there, Jon Anderson saw the kids and whispered something to one of the staff. They then took us of out the queue and said that Jon wanted to meet the kids. They all got to talk to him (not much, but who cares...) but it was really great for them (and the proud father) and they got two videos and and a Ladder Tour Edition signed (we bought them). They also got interviewed by a guy who makes a DVD from the European tour.
