I listened to Patrick Moraz play some great solo piano this afternoon at the NAMM show in LA. He was the featured performer this year for Baldwin. I haven't seen him since he moved to FLA. so it was nice to hang out and catch up. I spent about 4 hrs. at the convention today and the stuff Patrick was playing was the best I heard outa anybody there today.
He took me into one of the side rooms and played some killer lead synth over some sequenced paterns programed into one of the Baldwins electric keyboards. I've been kinda missin' him lately so it's kinda cosmic to just drive downtown and hear my bro play knowin' he'll be flying 3,000 miles back to FLA. and not knowing when I'll ever see him again . . .
He started his solo piano set with an improve based on 3 notes from the audience. He also did Childrens Concerto ? from Moraz/Bruford "Music for Piano and Drums" and some stuff from "Story of I"
I don't post here often but what the hey, I know there's a couple of you out there that might enjoy vicariously visiting the NAMM.

I have just read a review of the new Tim Morse book 'Classic Rock
Stories: The Stories Behind the Greatest Songs of all Time.'
Record Collector says
"Debate the title if you will. Penned by a Californian musician and yes biographer, this well laid-out, stock-illustrated work relates a host of "stories" ranging from Aerosmith to ZZ Top, by way of the Beatles,Stones, Led Zep and numerous other pop/rock stalwarts like ELP, Neil Young, and the Moody Blues. But before you get too excited, it should be said that many of the 220 or so stories contained in this 212-page tome are more, well, sentences. If that. Full page explanations of a song's origins are few and far between, with Percy Plant's telling tale about 'Stairway' confined to the comment that he "loathes it". Hardly earth-shattering stuff."
No mention of whether Yes are included. I have not seen the book yet and this review does not make me want to dash out for it.

Elinor writes, regarding 'Classic Rock Stories':
"No mention of whether Yes are included. I have not seen the book yet and this review does not make me want to dash out for it."
Yes Yes are included. Yes Yes indeed Yes.
Jon tells the 'story' behind the lyrics to YiND. He is in essence saying that, once in Vietnam, the 'kids' in the draft *had* to fight or be killed. Hence, no disgrace, even though it is the most 'cruel, degrading, abysmal' thing they could be doing. They had to fight the politicians war.
In another entry he tells the story of Long Distance Runaround. In essence, religion confused him. He was going round in circles looking for the sight, the sound, the reality of God. He suggests it is a theme oft visited in his work over the years.
The entries are barely longer than my summaries above. The book covers about 200 'classic' songs in similiar vein.
I only got this yesterday and have had no time to do other than quickly scan the index to find obvious Yes references. I guess to protect myself from copyright lawyers, I should say 'Buy the Book'!!

Maybe YES moments are contagious! Today I was watching classic videos on MTV, and they showed "Leave It". I have never seen that before.

VH1 just did a special on the show "Where Are They Now" and featured a short spot for The Buggles.
Seemingly, the only reason they were included is because "Video Killed The Radio Star" was the first video ever shown on MTV. It was dreadful watching this hour long show with bands like Bow Wow Wow, English Beat, Wang Chung & Boy George all who were awarded 5 minute spots! (My wife thought I was nuts when she saw me watching it!!!)
The Buggles were given about 1 minute at the end and only centered on Trevor Horn. They said, "after his failed stint with the 80's band YES," he went on to produce Paul McCartney, Tina Turner & Seal. The only bright spot was when they showed a picture of Trevor Horn on stage with Steve Howe. Horn also appeared for a few comments about the Buggles.
Downes did not appear, nor was his name or career mentioned, not even for Asia!!!
Watch for it air again this week, it's the one about British Rock. Then again... don't torture yourself!!!

'Classic Rock' magazine includes a CD upon which is one track from Clive Nolan and Oliver Wakeman's 'Jabberwocky' cd ('The Mission') + Marillion's 'These Chains' (happy Roxi?!) and other artists. Three pages are devoted to a Rick Wakeman interview.
I would be happy to go to a shop and purchase "stock" of the magazine (+ cd) for sale, at cost price (including postage) provided each buyer will please also buy from me one stock copy of 'Keyboard Review' magazine, as mentioned on the Progressive Spiral website Merchandise Sale page, linked from :
www.geocities.com/RainForest/Vines/2757
Those magazines are in prestine condition and are being offered at cost price. I bought the stock direct from the publisher - and it was me who got Rick Wakeman the interview with 'Keyboard Review'! Other in-depth interviews are Vangelis, Geoff Downes and the wife of John McLaughlin (4 different issues).

Here is what Steve Howe is quoted as stating :
Yes - Progmeisters Yes are currently working on the follow-up to 1997’s Open Your Eyes. The current line-up of vocalist Jon Anderson, guitarist Steve Howe, bassist Chris Squire, drummer Alan White, guitarist Billy Sherwood and Russian-born keyboard player Igor Khoroshev are currently in Vancouver recording with producer Bruce Fairbairn of Kiss, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi and Cranberries fame.
The band are well aware that many Yes devotees were disappointed with “Open Your Eyes” and its 1994 studio predecessor “Talk” and are determined to make amends this time.
“The ‘Open Your Eyes’ album was very formulated,” admits Steve Howe. “I was never too sure about it. While we were working on it I was shouting, ‘Surely you don’t think Yes fans are gonna like this?’ It was the other half of the band who wrote it - sometimes Jon and I will slant the music and other times it’ll be Chris and Billy. They made “Big Generator”, we made “Union” and they made “Talk”; it seems to go back and forth. But when that happens you just have to take what comes along.”
Howe, speaking before heading off to Vancouver, explained that he longs to recapture the spirit of exploration personified by groundbreaking pieces like “Awaken”.
“We told Bruce face-to-face that we’re not looking for a pop hit,” he stresses. “We’ll write the way we used to; four walls, five instruments and a lot of songs. It’s not going to be a songwriter or a producer’s album, we want it to be a band album. We will be taking each idea and working and arranging it properly. It has to be a more complex album than “Open Your Eyes”, or Jon and myself wouldn’t want to be involved. We need to balance the band’s outer and inner faces - the former being acceptability and the latter being our sense of complexity. Yes needs to make wonderful music again.”

Check out what Steve Howe has planned for a spring release. This Bob Dylan tribute project includes Jon Anderson, Geoff Downes and Annie Haslam. nfte.org/Steve.Howe

Time for some news: Steve Howe's new release - Portraits of Bob Dylan - will be released this spring. Jon Anderson is one of several interesting vocals on this upcoming album, he sings on the 1st track; 'Sad Eyed Lady of The Lowlands'. Other great vocalists participating are Max Bacon and Annie Haslam.
Geoff Downes on keyboards on three tracks. Drums is played by Dylan (Dylan Howe, that is).

A new interview page has just been established, feauturing interviews with Bill Bruford, Steve Hackett, Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic, Fred Frith, Paul Richards, and Robert Anton Wilson. Check out Interviews.

Hi All, I was checking the Music Blvd web site and I noticed there a new live Yes cd with a release date of 2/16/99. It's entitled "Live in Philadelphia" and I'm sure it's the same show as the video release. Just thought you'd like to know. No price is given. here's the link.

Could be that the Live in Philly show is coming out on CD. There has been multiple advertisements for this show to come out on DVD on 3/2/99. This looks like about a 50 min. show, with some of the "classics" from (?) 1979.

I was wondering if any of you out there got the YES "Live In
Philadelphia" DVD? This DVD was a major disappointment to me. I guess I could have read up on this DVD's details before I ordered it, but like a true YES fan....I saw....I ordered. Be warned: this video is short (51 minutes), it's in mono, it's of poor video quality (can anyone say camcorder?), and I think the director of this concert video forgot about Rick and Alan (the limited shots of Rick are from horrible camera angles-especially his keyboard solos). With all that out in the open, I still probably would get it, because it shows YES during a period when I never saw them live. So in that respect, I say thanks to Image Video for releasing this rare gem. Now, when is YES going to release on DVD "The Keys Tour", "9012LIVE", and most importantly "The Union Tour" (Rick and Trevor live on stage together....that was a dream come true). Anyone wanting an awesome DVD should get "Rick Wakeman Live", also from IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT. This video has great video and sound. Tony Fernandez and Rick are incredible.

Picked up Peter Banks' SELF-CONTAINED today. Way better than Howe's QUANTUM GUITAR. Very interesting stuff. I'm sorry I overlooked him... I'll have to make up for that.

The latest Artist Shop newsletter is out and you'll find it in its entirety at Artist Shop. But here's some Yes related excerpts just for you.

Does anyone else here have El Greco, the new CD from Vangelis? This is so wonderfully beautiful.
News from Vancouver: Someone with connections says the band plans to finish recording by Mid-March. They are very high on the new music, which supposedly includes some written by Igor and Jon together. The tentative plan is to tour Europe beginning in May and coming to the US in July or August. This source cannot deny that the band is planning to call the CD, Look At My Bunny

Word is that they might be touring Europe first, but that might be May-June so July in LA is a good possibility. BTW, they're scheduled to work on the album till March 15. From what I've heard, they're please with what's happening with it. Also, Igor IS involved in writing parts with Jon that have been accepted by Fairbairn for the album.
I got this from the Japanese Yes mailing list:
"My Friend Tomoo taught me that Asia web site attached MP3 files of rare Asia trax. www.monmouth.com
"I was very surprised to listen to the Medley Embryos" (3MB/28mins), which included Only Time Will Tell Demo with Trevor Rabin! You can hear Trevor is singing!!"
I have to check it out, sounds interesting.

For all Long Islanders/NY Yes fans, this Friday (Feb. 26) night at 8PM on 90.3, Kristina Morgan is having a two hour Yes Radio spotlight. The best thing seems to be that not only is she a really big Yes fan but she also plans on playing some of the songs that are not usually played on the radio. Her favorite Yes album seems to be Relayer, if that is any indication of what "rare gems" to
expect...
Rick will be On Never Mind The Buzzocks again next Friday (26) at 9.30 in the UK.
Dear Ones,
For those of you who are unaware, I have been blessed in my life with a penchant for the culinary arts, which has landed me a career in Chefdom which is, ooooh, SO much fun [rolling eyes and laughing]! But let me not tell you all about the joys of feeding ungrateful yuppies....I shall speak instead of a small Southern California coffee company (called Higher Bean) which supplies
the restaurant for which I work with some pretty damned good stuff (there IS a point to all this, so please be patient, LOL! Thanks!).
A few months ago, the man who orders packaged foods for our natural-foods market division called me over and said, "Hey, Tasia, we just got a new coffee in from Higher Bean. You're going to love it...and not JUST because you're a java-head." He asked me to wait until he'd filled the coffee-bean bins with it in the front of the store, and then come out and see. Playing along, I said "Okay, Ryan. I'll be there in a little while."
I went back to my work, and fifteen minutes later, Ryan paged me and said "Where are you?! I've been waiting for you! Come and see this coffee!" So I went to the front where Ryan stood by the bins, and looked at the lovely beans. They didn't look any different than our usual haul, so I just looked up at him, puzzled.
"So?" I said. "What makes these so special?"
He leaned forward and slipped the coffee company's flavor-identification placard into its slot on the bin. And upon it, my friends, I read the words:
HEART OF THE SUNRISE
An Organic Morning Blend
This medium-roasted blend offers subtle
I almost fell over. Of course, Ryan immediately told me that the company's owner, one Mr. Brown (!!), is a rabid Yes fan. Thought you'd all like this little tale. Anyone who wishes to reprint this on the AOL Yesboards or on P* is more than welcome to do so.....!
Laughing as ever,
Rick will be on Countdown from Wednesday 4.30 C4 in the UK
