On a visit to Yes world Igor is no longer listed in the members section. I guess that means he is no longer employed by the band.

Peter Banks to play Baja Prog Festival
From: Rhea Frankel [rheayes@yahoo.com] - Jan. 16

Just yesterday, I mentioned on this list that I was going to a progressive rock festival this March called Baja Prog. It's located in Mexicali, Baja Peninsula, Mexico, not too far from San Diego. There are several festivals like this that take place in North America, featuring many of the newer and lesser known prog bands. I was really looking forward to it. Then, it got even better. A former member of Yes will be playing there. Peter Banks!

Peter will be playing a one-off show with John Jowitt of the bands IQ and Jadis. The rest of the band will be made up of other members of IQ and Jadis and the singer from Pallas. The band is being billed as "John Jowitt and Friends". John is a really big Yes fan, and a helluva nice guy. He was going to play with Peter at a show in Connecticut last year. Unfortunately, it was poorly organized, and got cancelled last minute. I know they were planning to do Beyond and Before and Small Beginnings at that show, so there's a good chance we'll hear some Yes and Flash at the Baja Prog performance.

This festival lasts from Wednesday, February 28th to Saturday, March 3rd. Other bands that will be playing there include the classic Italian band Le Orme, and two of my current favorites, Finisterre and Solaris. I'll be happy to give more information about any of these bands to anyone interested.

There are still new bands out there making progressive music. It's tougher to find out about them, because they don't get major label support or airplay. These festivals are a great way to find out about new progressive rock bands and to meet other fans. I've never been to Baja Prog before, but my boyfriend has gone the last three years, and raves about it. I've had a lot of fun at the other festivals I've been to, even if I'm not familiar with many of the bands playing.

I'm looking forward to this one. I hope that some of you will be interested enough to check it out. Oh, and tickets are only $60 for four days of music.

You can find out more information at the following link: http://www.1russ.com/BAJAPROG/.

8 Jan. I was kindly sent the relevant post from the Pallas list by Reed:

From: ALAN REED [reeda10@h...] - Jan. 8
Subject: Re: [Eyes in the Net] Baja 2001

errr...

I was indeed planning to go to Baja as part of John Jowitt's "Brit-prog" supergroup.. We were going to go out under the name of "Nonspacific", playing a mix of Pallard, IQ and excerpts from that West-end theatre classic "Saucy Jack". It seems there are some insuperable availability problems for some of the line-up (not me!!), so it looks to have fallen by the wayside.

There may of course turn out to be other occasions where this particular beast gets its act together.

Masterworks tour release
From: [progfellow] - Jan 16

Here's a little tidbit I thought you might be interested in:

Masterworks tour release
Yes will be releasing a live album from last summer's Masterworks tour. The release will be of the 19 Jul show in Holmdel, NJ, which is already available as a webcast at SFX; set list-intro: Benjamin Britten's "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra"; "Close to the Edge", "Starship Trooper", "Gates of Delirium", "Leaves of Green" ("The Ancient" excerpt), "Heart of the Sunrise", "Ritual", "I've Seen All Good People"; encore: "Roundabout". (Further details of the tour can be found at the Forgotten Yesterdays site and the YesNet tour site at YesWorld.)

from AMY............oh god, let it be true..........

"I was just reading the new issue of Modern Drummer, and Alan White said that a digitally mastered CD recorded during the Masterworks tour is slated for release in the near future. Anyone hear anything else about this?"

From: Yes ELP kCrimson

It's already been posted on an AMY-FAQ webpage that it will indeed be the Holmdel show. The setlist given there includes "Ritual" which I believe wasn't on the FM broadcast but was part of the the SFX webcast: http://www.bondegezou.demon.co.uk/wnyesm.htm#yes.

SLO event, possibly with Rick Wakeman

From: David Westbay [dwwestbay@mail.com] - Jan. 18

Hello all,

Yes, I have returned to the Southside list (not that I was ever a big presence here before). My ulterior motive in rejoining is to talk up the San Luis Obispo event that I suggested a while back and now seems to be getting closer to a reality.

I know from friends on this list that the event has been discussed here somewhat already. Let me bring you up to date on where things stand now.

First, the SLOreunion eGroups list is my main vehicle for posting info and updates about this project, so I encourage everyone who is interested in what is happening to subscribe to that list. For those of you who aren't interested in getting even more e-mail in your inbox, eGroups offers a very nice feature: you can set your preference to "No Mail/Web Only" so that you can go to the list's page at the eGroups web site to read the messages, and not have any messages sent to you. You can also read the archives of earlier messages (unlike Southside), and there are places to upload files, post links, and even chat. I have been thinking of having a chat session there to talk about the project but haven't decided when to do that. Anyway, to get the latest news on the SLO event, please sign up for our list. You can do so by sending an e-mail to:

SLOreunion-subscribe@egroups.com
or by going to http://www.egroups.com/group/SLOreunion and clicking the "Subscribe" link.

OK, the news. Nic C. has been in touch with Rick and has received a favorable response from Rick about playing a piano concert in SLO the first weekend in March. More details need to be worked out, including Rick's exact schedule, transportation for Rick to and from SLO, Rick's fee and other requirements, and so forth. Therefore, Rick is *not* confirmed as of now, but the prospects of him being there still look good. We hope to be able to confirm within the next week or so, at which time "official" announcements will be made and plans will proceed apace.

In the meanwhile, contact is being made on other fronts, such as finding a venue where the concert can be held, a piano for Rick to play, a hotel that would be the "headquarters" for the event, possible sponsors such as local businesses, publicity, tickets, etc. etc. etc. Right now only two of us are doing this legwork: Roxi Cook and myself. We could use any help that anyone can offer! We think that this could be a lot of fun, but we don't want to burn ourselves out putting it together. Anyone who would be willing to volunteer to help in any way, large or small, is welcome to join us in our efforts. The more tasks we can divide up amongst several people, the faster and easier things will get done.

We also don't have a lot of money to "front" for the expenses that are likely to be incurred to get this going. We expect to use ticket sale revenue to cover most if not all of the expenses, but there will be money needed before the first ticket is sold. We need some help in that area too! Please contact me if you would be willing to "invest" in this event, in any amount. Perks for investors can be discussed. :-)

I'm not sure what else to say at this point, so I will close by saying that I think this will be a great way for Yes fans to get together and celebrate the Yes shows that turned into the Keys to Ascension CDs. If Rick ends up playing there, that will be the icing on the cake. Please consider signing up for the SLOreunion list, which is where most of the activity for this project will be discussed. I will pop in here periodically to post updates and see if there is any discussion going on that I should get in on.

Thanks for your support, and I hope to see lots of you in SLO the weekend of March 2-4, 2001!

Dave Westbay

On your Yes search for unreleased material, type in the word "unreleased" under the song title and you'll find rarities, B-sides, studio sessions, Chris Squire vaulting cans of beer into the air with a golf club.... Enjoy!

I've been talking to Billy ( author ) about this for a while now. It's gonna be a very interesting read. I've been looking forward to this coming out for a while now. Billy has been so kind to pass on a couple stories to me over the months. I'm not passing them on...and there is no waiting on the movie ( not yet anyway )...get the book. I'm sure Peter would appreciate it, as I'm sure Billy ( James...aka Ant-Bee ) would too.

As I get more news I'll pass it on. Please do me a favor, and forward this post to all the Yes mailing lists out there. No sense in this being a secret.

Peter Banks update
From: [GBrown8287@aol.com] - Jan. 30

Hey Gang, Remember when I told you this:

The Peter Banks book - Astral Traveler - The Formative Years Of YES - will be released in the US - May 2001, by Golden Treasures Publishing. A link can be found at the Ant-Bee website:

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/antbee/

Well, guess what? All that cool info is still true, except for one little item. Mr. Banks has changed the name of the book to; "Beyond And Before".

As I get more news I'll pass it on. As requested before, please do me a favor, and forward this post to all the Yes mailing lists out there. For that fact, tell anyone you know who you think might be interested ( your coworkers, neighbors, and don't forget those good people who take your money everyday in the toll booths ). I'm sure their are other Yes fans out there as excited as I am about this. After all, Peter is and will always be, the original guitarist in Yes.

Over the years, I tried to find out what I could about him, while keeping up with his solo work. Especially in the nineties. Every new solo CD that he released, just peaked more curiosity for me. Who really is this guy? I always knew their was a story to tell here. Truth is, he has remained a bit of a mystery to me. Out of all the musicians that have been in Yes, I know least about Peter then I do any other member, past or present. I'm sure the book will change that.

Chris Squire at NAMM
From: "A.M." [_gatecrasher_@yahoo.com] - Jan. 23

Someone took some photos of Chris at the NAMM(National Association of Music Merchants)show on Saturday, trying out Rickenbackers. Hm...growing his hair out again? http://www.homestead.com/aurs3/CSq.html

Figures...I went to NAMM Friday and Sunday! But I did get to see Vince DiCola and some incredible Squire-esque bassist named Paul Ill (and a forgotten drummer) in the most awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping prog jam I have ever seen. So I'm happy :-)

ENVISION Jon Anderson/Phil Keaggy
From: matt riddle [MattRiddle@compuserve.com] - Jan. 24

Last night, I was fortunate to witness an awesome event at the Robin Hood (same club mentioned below). A reunoin of the original Glass Harp, featuring guitar legend, Phil Keagy. Great show, I'll never forget it. Anyway, after the show I was talking to Phil and he mentioned that he had just laid guitar tracks on six songs for Jon Anderson's next solo CD! Should be very cool.
