Yes at CES 2002
From: Sergio [deacha@pacbell.net] - Jan. 11
Thought I'd give you a quick run down of YES' (Jon, Alan, Chris) appearance at the XM Music trade show booth in Las Vegas.Just as they did last year with Jon, XM Music staged a live broadcast area from their trade show booth with YES members this year. YES members were scheduled to appear a few times during the trade show. The interviewer was Pat Dinizio (singer from the Smithereens), a self-proclaimed YES fan.
While MC Hammer was concluding his appearance, members of YES started to arrive and mingle with people at the booth. They were then called into the live broadcast area for the interview and Q&A from the audience. "Yours in no disgrace" started to play over the speakers, and you could immediately see Chris, Jon , and Alan getting into the groove of the music, and tapping away on the desk with their hands marking the tempo and transitions (Jon played a little air guitar for a while on Steve's "wah-wah" solo). They were really enjoying the listening session.
By now, about 100 people were congregating around the live broadcast area, and Pat started the interview. Pat started off with Alan by asking questions about his collaboration with John Lennon. In fact Pat brought up John Lennon twice during this appearance and never made reference to Alan's contributions to George Harrison's releases.
Then Pat started to ask Jon about the recent tour, the Magnification release, and future touring plans. Jon made a comment that some discussions were going on about a tour in the summer time. Jon also started to joke around a lot with Pat. Jon made a reference that a specific sound/feedback was coming in through his headphones and it sounded exactly like the film "Contact".
Pat asked the guys whether they keep in touch with past members, to which Jon replied that Peter Banks had seen them during the UK tour. Then the infamous "who's playing keyboard?" question came up to which the guys simply replied that the decided to do the Magnification album with an orchestra and left it at that.
Pat followed up with a question about Eddie Offord and why not get him to produce an album. Between Jon and Chris the response was that they were looking into this perhaps for the next album, and I believe Alan made some funny comment about Eddie's smoking habits... Then Chris followed up with a comment about not being able to find Eddie, to which they all had a good laugh. Mind you, all these comments were in rapid succession/rapid fire.
Alan seemed to be quite alert, and enjoying himself. Chris on the another hand looked tired and was somewhat slouching on the chair. I noticed Alan and Jon making fun of him through gestures. I also think that Chris had lost some weight. Chris simply seemed tired.
The interview was being broadcast on Satellite Radio (XM) and Magnification was being played throughout the breaks.
Then, they started a Q&A from the audience. I got my chance to ask Chris a question. After one-hour of interviews and Q&A, the band left the broadcast area and proceeded for a meet and greet sort of arrangement. YES management was handing out the publicity shot of the band (which I've uploaded to this list, along with another picture of me and Jon from his appearance last year).
I chatted with Jon a bit to fill him in on where I've landed since my departure from Liquid Audio, and we also talked about how nervous and excited he is about the 49er game on Sunday (Jon is a HUGE 49er fan).
That's all I can remember from the appearance.
