Music Street Journal Number Five is available online at

Music Street Journal
By Gary Hill (Yes0001@aol.com) - June 1

This month`s offering features a special section devoted to Cairo, including reviews of their first album (Cairo), their latest album (Conflict and Dreams (this review was in the archive section, but has been moved back to the main section for this special)), and an interview with Mark Robertson. Also in this issue is ... a review of Jon Anderson`sEarthMotherEarth ballet (by guest reviewer Anne Corbin), another review of the same ballet in the form of a poem by Wendy Vig ... [snip]

Archival reviews are also available there. Tour dates that are there are up are for Yes .... The Progressive Rock Archive Page contains reviews of albums by Anubis Spire, Ajalon, Lands End, Fish, Spock`s Beard, The Lonely Bears, Various Artists-Tales From Yesterday, Dream Theater, Tempest, Pentwater, Genesis, Nektar and Ancient Vision. There have been enough Yes reviews here to warrant their own archive page. Tony Levin is the only person who has been featured (in one project or another) in every issue thus far. With that in mind, I have devoted an entire page of my archives to those reviews.. .. In the Concert Review Archive you will find reviews of Yes and Rush. There are two interviews in the Interview Archive. One is a very in depth interview with Tony Levin and the other is with Randy George of Ajalon.

Yes mentioned in Daily News

From Kevin Caffrey (snnrissrvd@aol.com) - June 2

Today in the Entertainment Section of the New York Daily News, regarding "success after a pivotal member leaves a band"--Yes was mentioned. After pointing out that The Doors had an album go gold after Jim died and Ray M. took over singing duties, the writer (jim farber--who is really a moron sometimes) goes on to say, "as did Yes after Jon Anderson left". So Panthers, _Drama_ is getting the acknowledgement it deserves, eh?

Guitar Magazine

Date Mark Cuddillee (MECLEC) - June 6

Again "Clap" has been mistaken for "The Clap", this time in Guitar Magazine. It's one of their transcribed songs for the issue. As they introduce Steve's fingerpicking masterpiece, GM in the first sentence warns something like "get ready for another case of "The Clap". I thought it was too funny! Also included was a small black and white picture of Steve with ponytail with one of his many axes ( I can't believe I forgot to pay attention to which one).

No Mind Drive!

From Henry Potts - June 8

It appears that Yes will *not* be playing "Mind Drive" on tour this summer. Anderson and Howe wanted to, but the others had problems playing it. They'll be playing "Yours is No Disgrace" instead.

Yes Taping for VH1

From Sarah Dowless - June 9

Hey all! Scott just walked in the door with some wild news!! Apparently Yes will be taping some sort of thing for VH1 on Monday, June 15th! I don't have any other details about it, but he did give me a number to call..212- 833-4268.

***************
From Robin Kauffman: This is what I was talking about when I said to expect another announcement about something coming up in the next couple of weeks. They're taping VH-1's Hard Rock Live. It's been in the works for a few weeks, but really was just confirmed this Monday so that's why there hasn't been any announcement yet. Not sure how long the taping will be or what song(s) they'll do etc.

***************
From YesWorld: See Yes at VH1 Taping

Fans are invited to attend the taping of Yes' performance for the VH1 program Hard Rock Live on Monday, June 15.

Admission is free. Tickets can be obtained by calling Tony Carroll or Noel Gonzalez at 212-833-4268. Tell them you read about it on YesWorld, Yes' online service.

Location of the taping is at Sony Music Studios, 460 West 54th Street, NYC; audience load-in is at 11:30 AM with taping to be done between 12:30 and 1:30 PM. <<

***************
More from Robin: Just wanted to pass along that I found out that Yes will be taping 6 songs on Monday for VH-1. However, that doesn't mean that all 6 will make the show. Didn't get any of the song titles but was told that they did some great editing jobs on a few of them (I'm sure they're given only a certain amount of time). I bet you we can start a LOT of rumors as to what they might do with that statement.

However, you won't see the whole set that they recorded today on TV. They also recorded over an hours worth of interviews with the guys after the show that will be interspersed into what is shown on TV. Evidently they used to show Hard Rock Memorabilia during Hard Rock Live, but will now use interviews with the bands being shown instead. Anyway, all of this will be edited down to 1/2 hour so that means a LOT of it won't be used. When it is shown on July 24, it'll be 1/2 hour of Yes shown along with 1/2 hour of the Moody Blues.

Review of VH1 Taping

From: MHJr - June 17

I thought when Jon made that comment about three fans of the song [Mind Drive] he was referring to himself, Steve and Alan wanted to hear it (play it) live - particularly since he looked over at Chris/Billy after saying it.

***************
From Sue Mariconda: Phil and I had an absolutely wonderful time. The studio is fairly small, with most of the people standing for the show. I decided that after waiting on line 90 minutes, I couldn't stand anymore, so I took a seat in one of the 5 rows they had. (Probably equivalent to 10th row at a show.) I picked the last row since I'd have the best view being highest up, and I was directly across from Jon. Unfortunately, the row in front of us was reserved for American Express (one of the shows sponsors) and the entire row was filled with "suits" who looked like they could've given a shit if they were there or not. So, when Jon looked up, he'd see a row of people who looked disinterested at best.

I decided I needed to compensate for this, and let me tell you, I went wild like I've never done at a Yes show in my life! (Maybe they need to do all their shows at noon so I'd be more awake! :) I am normally a person who sits quietly at all shows, but I decided that (1) Jon needed the inspiration and (2) if I should be shown on TV just sitting quietly, it would definitely be taken as disinterest. So, I apologize to the poor guy at my right as I banged into him repeatedly while dancing and screaming like a lunatic. :) I spent most of the show with my arms above my head waving and/or clapping them insanely (while most people immediately around me were half comatose). Jon even waved at me at one point. What a wonderful experience. I should try insanity more often at a Yes show.

I also enjoyed our impromptu lunch at the Hard Rock (although I was a little nervous about being 4 blocks from my office on a day I called in sick!). I got to meet Impy for the first time, and let's see if I can remember all the people there at lunch...Zoey, Jerry, Impy, Slammy, Rhea, Tina, me and Phil...I think that was it (forgive me if I forgot anyone). We had a great time, and I'm truly glad I went. It's just a shame that most people are not going to see most of what we saw at the taping as it was truly magical.

BTW, there was actually another song they were supposed to play, but I'm annoyed that I can't remember what the hell it was! Being in the last row, we were able to lean over behind us and read the set list that was lying on the equipment, so I knew what they were supposed to play ahead of time. Leaves of Green was definitely impromptu, and there was something else they were to do instead of that. Nothing mindblowing I do recall...probably another of the "greatest hits" from the tour. Guess it doesn't matter anyway as it seems that between commercials and interviews, they'll probably have time for half each of Roundabout and OOALH. :)

BTW, I don't recall if anyone mentioned what day it's airing, but it's July 24th.

Guitar Center Concert and Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame

From Steve Staub (obispo@prodigy.net) - June 10

A friend of mine just called me and let me know about a contest at the "Guitar Center" stores that he had heard about. Apparently, you can sign-up for this "Yes Contest" where you can become elgible to win copies of "Open Your Eyes" and concert tickets.

Also, four winners will go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for some reason or other....does this mean that Yes is going to be finally inducted this year? :)

And finally, one of the four will win Chris Squire's bass rig.

***************
From Robert Murray (rwm@uci.edu): I've got the ad. You've said most of it, but here's how it works:

During the month of June, visit your local Guitar Center and enter to win at the Yes contest display. One winner from each store will get a pair of tickets and after-show passes to their local Yes concert and three lucky 1st prize winners will be flown to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. But that's not all! One lucky Grand Prize winner from the three 1st prize winners will receive the Chris Squire "Bass Rig" and be flown from the Hall of Fame [to] see Yes in concert on the last date of their U.S. tour in Miami!

That's taken directly from the ad on page 4 of their latest mailer. The Bass Rig is his signature Rickenbacker Bass as well as an Ampeg SVT Rig (amp & speaker cabinet). That's basically all it says. See store for contest rules and more details.

It doesn't say anything about them being inducted, but I was also wondering why they would fly you there. Let's all hope - they're long overdue!

Hamburg Show TV Broadcast

From Brian Neeson - June 18

Joern said: "I've visited that page and believe it or not, I remember you ! I was walking up and down in the foyer of the CCH and I remember two things: one was a gang of danish fans (armed with six packs) next, I've noticed that somebody was speaking english."

I talked about that show being filmed for TV, and we could not find out when it would be broadcast? I have just received the details below.

[The HH1 show named KUNO was broadcast in May the YES in Hamburg documentary. It runs approx 30 min, shows a lot live footage , and an interview with Alan, Steve, Chris and Billy, Jon joined later to the interview, Most of the interview is in English with some german overdubs, but you can hear most of the original interview in English. They talked about the beginning of YES from 68 and if they played early in Hamburg - plus some short promo clips.]

So if you would like a copy of the video, Joern, I should be able to put you in contact with someone in North of Germany who has a master tape.
