Howes-Tricks Invitation

From: Rand [laserand@webtv.net] - May 27

Hello, since you all are my friends on the net and I actually know Raymus in real life, I wanted to invite you into another mailing list to discuss Steve Howe.

My alter-ego is Airshift, I was using this because I didn't want to appear overbearing with the onelists, but now I realize it was just stupid and will now tell everybody. I don't want to be known as a liar, because I'm not. The truth will set us free.

Hope you all will forgive my error in judgement, Rand

Union Video

From: Javier Olaizola [diapason@soltel.com.uy] - June 2

An official live video from the Union Tour (San Francisco 8/8/91) will be released in Japan both on VHS and LD formats next month. It s about 110 min long. The 8/8/91 video that will be released is not "In the Round" but on a normal stage.

*****************************************

From: laserand@webtv.net - June 2

I just read that the 8/8/91 show at the Concord Pavillion is coming out next month on vhs/laser disc in Japan.

I went to that concert and it was incredible. I was also at the 5/17/91 show at the Oakland Colosseum "in the round" and that's the one they should put out on video, even more incredible.

****************************************

From: Gary Davis [artshop@artist-shop.com] - June 3

Javier is definitely correct on this. I just got the following information from my import distributor on the laserdisc.

YES-YESSHOWS '91
Scheduled Release Date 07/23/99
Japanese release, the worldwide debut of this 117 minute long performance from 1991. Tracks & further details TBA.

The release date refers to its scheduled release in Japan. If it holds to that schedule, it should reach the US the following week. I wonder if there are any plans to put this on DVD? Or for a US release?

**************************************

From: brian_neeson@solectron.co.uk - June 4

And the tracklist for the video is on SYN Update number 21 to be found at http://home.bip.net/sthk/scotsman. (Thanks again THK).

**************************************

From Dave Leidig [nightliner@webtv.net] - June 5

I am sure most, if not all of subscribe to NTFE, bt if not they mention a Union video coming out in Japan in July. This is correct, and I have just placed in order for mine.

It will be 65 plus shipping. That is expensive, but I have paid more than that for things I didn't want as much....such as the Jap. laserdisc of 9012Live of Live at QPR.

In reference why laserdisc and not DVD? Good question. The only thing I can think of is that the laserdisc is and always was more popular in Japan than they were over here, plusthe laserdisc can be played internationally while DVD's are regionnally encoded. With my luck, a month after I get the laserdisc, someone will release it over here on DVD. The current Yes DVD's suck, except for ABWH. That on is an improvement over the laserdisc.

Yes tour with Tull? (was "Anybody Home)

From: brian_neeson@solectron.co.uk - June 4

Nazarena said
"You were right, Cindy...Steve won't be in Argentina, at least for a while (probably after Yes tour) Bad news."

Sorry to hear that Steve has cancelled his July Argentina dates. However, we in Europe saw that tour announcement as a barrier to Yes playing with Tull in Italy in July.

Now Steve has said in an interview (not published yet) that Yes WILL tour with another "70s Prog band - probably Jethro Tull" later this year. I am away from the Web just now (in Mexico with my trusty laptop) so I haven't heard any "official" news - is the Italy Festival "rumour" hopping again?

Trevor Rabin returns (but not to Yes)

From: Keith [MOREBARN] - June 6

I don't know if anyone has posted this yet, but it seems our buddy Trevor will be performing at the Hollywood Bowl on June 25 as part of a tribute to The Beatles, with George Martin conducting the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and "special guests". My guess is that he will be in the "Beatles In Hamburg" portion of the show. That's when they wore leather pants!

Bangles to play Beatles bash

JUNE 2 - Los Angeles pop/ rock group the Bangles are set to take the stage for the first time in a decade to pay homage to their childhood idols the Beatles in a special tribute show at the Hollywood Bowl on June 25. The concert will also include appearances by longtime Beatles producer Sir George Martin conducting the Hollywood Bowl orchestra, plus an all-star rock band with a line-up featuring former Yes vocalist and guitarist Trevor Rabin, Police drummer Stewart Copeland, and guitar virtuoso Eric Johnson.

Before achieving commercial success with top 10 hits like "Manic Monday" and "Walk Like An Egyptian" in 1986, the Bangles were an integral part of L.A.'s '60s-influenced Paisley Underground scene, where their multi-part harmonies and songwriting style were often compared to the Fab Four. In a 1986 interview on British television's Wide Awake Club, lead guitarist Vicki Peterson cited the Beatles as "the start of the reason why we're doing a band."

MSN's Austin Powers package
"We always really enjoyed that music, so what comes out of us naturally is basically the stuff we grew up on," drummer Debbi Peterson told Creem Rock Shots magazine the same year. "We can't help it. We don't want to help it! We just love that stuff so much."

News of the reunion was foreshadowed by reports last month that the band had regrouped to record a song for the Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me soundtrack, though the cut was reportedly not ready in time for the album's June 1 release date. Bangles lead singer Susanna Hoffs also appeared in the first film as a member of the fictional go-go group Ming Tea alongside Matthew Sweet and Powers creator Mike Myers.

The event comes nearly 34 years after the Beatles themselves made their third and last appearance at the venue on Aug. 30, 1965. Highlights from those shows, which took place over two consecutive summers in 1964 and 1965, later appeared on the 1977 release The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl.

Homeworld Says Yes - article from "Next Generation Online"

June 7, 1999

Homeworld, Relic Entertainment's upcoming space-based real-time strategy title, is to showcase a theme-tune created by veteran rock band, Yes.

The deal was signed along with Yes by Homeworld's publisher, Sierra Studios, and the company claims that the collaboration is the "largest rock/game promotion of 1999." The two parties met up while Yes were recording their forthcoming album, The Ladder, in Relic's hometown of Vancouver, B.C.

"I phoned Alex [Garden, CEO of Relic Entertainment] after learning that we could work one of our pieces of music into his games," said Yes band-member, Jon Anderson. "I just loved the way that he had formed the game visually and the story line was very similar to our lyrics, in that we're all trying to find our way home."

"Homeworld is the perfect game to warrant this huge promotion with Yes because of the broad appeal of the game," said Sierra Studios director of marketing, Jim Veevaert. "We found perfect partners with Beyond and the members of Yes and all agreed to embark on this relationship of historic proportions since it's never been done this way before."

Yes news from Undercover Music News from Australia
June 10, 1999
http://www.undercover.net/au.

Yes have completed work on their forthcoming album, just weeks after the death of their producer Bruce Fairbairn.

Fairbairn had actually finished his part of the record at the time of his death and the band completed the mix.

He is best remembered for his work with Bon Jovi, The Cranberries and Aerosmith.

YES features the classic line-up of Chris Squire (bass guitar), Jon Anderson (vocals, acoustic guitar), Steve Howe (lead guitar), Alan White (percussion), Billy Sherwood (guitar) and the newly added Igor Koroshev [sic] (keyboards).

Recently, the band partnered with Sierra Studios and Relic Entertainment for their fall release of PC real-time strategy game Homeworld.

Inspired by the underlying story from the game Homeworld, the band penned a song of the same name that will be featured on "The Ladder."

Sierra Studios will include the song on the Soundtrack of their game, due for release this summer.

BMG will release "The Ladder" in September.

"Axis of Love" links and Yesoteric material

From Jon - June 9

Seems most of the pages are links to the same material on his Yes site, But there is one other: http://www.geocities.com/PicketFence/Garden/5980/owenkite.html. It features From The Balcony from a live show in Warsaw. The version of Open Your Eyes by The Chris Squire Experiment before it was used by Yes Who Will Stop The Rain a version that sounds like Asia Looking for a singer when Wetton had left. Sound like Bacon from GTR. You Know by Rabin I think Hold You In My Arms from demos for We Make Believe Intro: from the same Intro led into a great song called To the Stars, there was a second version of the intro in which the themes were expounded further and led into the song better but these don't seem to be available on the page.

The Ladder Press Release

From: Roy DeRousse [relayer@iname.com] - June 11

Here's the official press release on the new album from Yes, The Ladder: Yesworld.

And here's the last line of it: "Look for a YES fall North American tour announcement shortly."

************************************

LOS ANGELES--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--June 9, 1999--YES is mixing their anticipated new album, ``The Ladder'' due on YES Beyond/BMG Entertainment on Sept. 12.

YES features the classic line-up of Chris Squire (bass guitar), Jon Anderson (vocals, acoustic guitar), Steve Howe (lead guitar), Alan White (percussion), Billy Sherwood (guitar) and the newly added Igor Koroshev (keyboards).

Bruce Fairbairn, legendary producer best known for his work with Aerosmith (``Get A Grip,'' ``Pump''), Bon Jovi (``Slippery When Wet,'' ``New Jersey'') and the Cranberries (``To The Faithful Departed''), had just completed making ``The Ladder'' prior to his death in May 1999.

YES, formed in 1967, has been on the leading edge of progressive rock music for more than three decades. YES has created some of rock's most enduring hits including ``Roundabout,'' ``Seen All Good People'' and ``Owner Of A Lonely Heart.'' To date, the band has sold more than 28 million albums worldwide including the unforgettable albums ``Fragile'' and ``Close To The Edge.'' ``The Ladder'' will mark the 30th anniversary of the band's first album release ``YES Album,'' released initially in 1969.

``YES create sort of a classical modern pop: a wacky mix of Stravinsky, Moody Blues and Vangelis scores...Their vocal harmonies have always been one of rock's most epic sounds.'' - Los Angeles Times, 1997

``YES has aged better than fellow classic rock icons the Who and the Rolling Stones because its music has always been based on experimentation and virtuosity.'' - Chicago Sun Times, 1997

Recently, YES has partnered with Sierra Studios and Relic Entertainment for their fall release of PC real-time strategy game Homeworld. Inspired by the underlying story from the game Homeworld, the band penned a song of the same name that will be featured on ``The Ladder.'' Sierra Studios will include the song on the soundtrack of their game, due for release this summer.

Look for a YES fall North American tour announcement shortly.

Beyond is a division of the Left Bank Organization, an operating company designed to market, promote, publicize and distribute entertainment properties on a worldwide basis.

Howe Tour Cancelled?

From: Martin Kornick [treasures@interaccess.com] - June 11

Last night I found out that Steve Howe is not coming to Buenos Aires next month for a solo concert that has been planned. I heard there were some conflicts with the dates of YES tour.

Howe could this be, I thought YES were not touring until the fall? Does anyone know anything about this?

***********************************

From Ceci [malacrida@impsat1.com.ar] - June 12

What we heard over here was that Steve wanted to tour first with Yes and then by himself. Though we still don't know if Yes is planning to tour Argentina.

"Outside Providence" Yes film music

From: Bob Don [robert.don@snet.net] - June 15

The upcoming movie that will feature music by Yes, Paul McCartney and Wings and other popular 70's bands is called "Outside Providence" and stars Alec Baldwin. It deals with a derelict teenager that is given a second change only if he can make it in a prep school that he is transferred to. I would guess the musical input by Yes will be something from their past catalog since the movie soundtrack seems to have a 70's theme.

**************************************** From:Rand Kelly [ laserand@webtv.net] - July 19

YES-Roundabout. Found out on Amazon.Com it's coming out tomorrow and the movie comes out on Aug.24. 1999.

A few months ago I guessed it would be America or Roundabout given the 1972 date and surmising it would have to be a radio-oriented song. The rest of the bands are not prog. Wings,Skynyrd, etc. Yes only has this one song on the cd.

Moraz on kids show

From: Tom Deptula [Wakemaniac] - June 15

I was flipping through the channels over the weekend when I see Patrick Moraz surrounded by what looked like 15 keyboards. I immediately got all excited and went for the volume switch. It turned out to be a one or two minute piece of Pat explaining synths to children on a show called (something like) The Ghost of Fennegal. Or the ghost of something or other. It was pretty weak but he did have a few good patches that he played to show what synths could do. Not much on the versitility side and he only used 3 or 4 of the 10 keys that were there. Thomas Dolby came on a little later and was real weak. It was cool seeing Pat though

Gumball Yes

From: Roy DeRousse [relayer@iname.com] - June 13

I found this on another list and found it interesting... to say the least!

===
From Rand Kelly [laserand@webtv.net]

This is really different, check it out. Yesterday while shopping in the local Safeway store, I saw a gumball machine that plays 4 little snippets of music over and over when someone passes by. I only heard one tune and as unbelievable as it may sound, it was the opening strains of a Fender Steel guitar being played by Steve Howe, Going For The One. I was shocked to say the least. It stops just before Jon sings. Of all the songs in the world the employee said there are only 4 in the thing and one is GFTO. WoW, I am amazed by this. It was never a hit single, and why isn't Owner Of A Lonely Heart in there instead? I am glad GFTO is being played as one of the 4 tunes, but nobody in this town of Fortuna,Ca (7,000) knows who Yes is. LOL

*******************************

From: Paul Bartek [pbartek@buffnet.net] - June 15

They have that gumball machine for sale at the local Sam's Club in Niagara Falls. It's called "The Kinetic Kid" and it always seems to be playing GFTO when I walk by. I guess I always assumed that this had been gone over before I joined the list.

Anyway, if anyone just has to have this for their Yes collection, I can find out the price and availability . . .

"Legacy" CD

From: Chris MacAdam [cmacadam@c3mail.com] - June 17

From the Official Jethro Tull Website I picked up this little nugget of info about Eddie Jobson...

"He will soon complete the new album project "Legacy", which features former members of Yes, King Crimson and Genesis, along with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bulgarian Women's Choir. This long-awaited masterwork has been composed, produced and engineered by Eddie and is due for release in January, 2000."

Anybody have any additional information...like who the former members of Yes and Genesis are that will be working on the project? I don't even know how current this is...

*****************************

From: Rob [kudla@pobox.com] - June 17

Well, this was originally going to be the return of UK, but Jobson had a falling out with.... pretty much everyone else involved. Off the top of my head, Bill Bruford, John Wetton and Steve Hackett were each involved at one time or another which takes care of those three groups. I think they announced it 2 or 3 years ago. At the time they (meaning Jobson and Wetton) described it as being dark and Zappa-esque.

Homeworld Yes Video

From: Eddie Lee [eddie_k_lee@hotmail.com] - June 19

Here's your first chance to check out the new Yes song that was written for Homeworld. Check out CNET Gamecenter to download the video that features an interview with Yes and Alex Garden, CEO of Relic Entertainment, as well as part of the song.

Here is the URL: ftp://ftp.download.com/pub/win95/games/Homeyes.mpg

The '70s megagroup Yes has developed music for Sierra Online and Relic Entertainment's long-awaited, real-time strategy game Homeworld. Though Homeworld is scheduled to ship on September 1, Gamecenter has a glimpse of the game, and the music, in an exclusive video.

Can someone point me to a site so that I can download an MPEG player in order to view the Homeworld video. I successfully downloaded it, saved it, but couldn't open it. So I went to the GameCenter site to read about it and discovered I need an MPEG player. I only have Movie Player (Quick Time Pro) and when I click on the movie, it says "Can't open homeyes.mpg." Am I doing something wrong? TIA for helping us uneducated souls as we learn this new technology.

Rene, my favorite place to get freeware and shareware is www.winfiles.com. This is only for Windows software. There are others like www.tucows.com and www.shareware.com which are pretty good too. Go to one of these sites and search on mpeg or mpg, and you should find a viewer. Good luck!
