Vol. 5, No. 8 - May 1998
Just a quick news Flash......CNN has a piece on Yes receiving a double platinum album award for their album released in 1970..(didn't catch the title and my memory fails me) and a triple platinum for "90125"!!
The story is on Headline News: Entertainment News which plays at :25 and :55 on the hour. This story will probably be played every other broadcast.

Thanks BS. I found it & got it on tape.. Thanks for flashing it & letting us know

A friend of mine mentioned Yes being on a local news broadcast. So he programmed the VCR to tape it at 7am. Unfortunately the VCR didn't tape it, but I got up around 8:15 and caught the tail end of an interview of Yes (Chris, Alan, Jon, and Billy) by Laura Buxton of KUSI.
I don't know what I missed, if I missed concert footage or what. I think it was just some interviews of Yes for their release of OYE surround sound.
Anybody see any footage today out there?

[That reminds me of something I've always meant to mention. About two years ago on "Entertainment Tonight" (it may have been "Hard Copy", I can't remember), they used "White Car" as the background music to some sordid tale.]
By far the funniest use of Yes music in a TV commercial would involve the intro to "Changes" being used to advertise some used merchandise (furniture?) store in Sudbury, Ontario. It sounded like it was recorded for the ad from a separate stereo system (which, knowing the general levels of professionalism in Sudbury, it probably was).

Yesterday night (5/9/98), Yes appeared on one of the mainstream French TV shows (something like Top Of The Pops, only worse ;-). To be true, I happened to see this quite by chance, as I don't usually watch this sort of shows.
So, guess what they played ? "Owner of a lonely heart" !!!!! You have to remember that KtA 2 was, on the whole, ignored by French critics and OYE received generally bad reviews, so "Owner" is probably the one song of the current setlist that could be played on TV.
This was a good performance, generally similar to what I heard live in March, probably recorded "live in the studio" on one of the weekends Yes was in France (either early March after the Paris concert or early April after the Lille shows, both of which happened on a Friday night).
The funniest part of the show was that this one features karaoke-style singing along by the audience, so you had this weird sight of the band doing their usual routine (with Billy and Jon seemingly quite amused and Steve looking bored) while the "Owner" lyrics were displayed on a screen above the stage *and* at the bottom of the TV screen, so probably even viewers at home could sing along. Quite weird ;-)

Hey gang... Christine Holz of MNN has asked me to pass this info along regarding the Camden show (6/27) and Yestival:
"We've been assured there will be a 'Philly Area Concert' during Yestival, and there will be a block of tickets for this show available for those who, have ordered two day passes to Yestival. We will post an update on the Yestival '98 Web Site (http://www.yesworld.com/yestival) as soon as we have more information.
"If the show is NOT in Camden as previously announced, we will work on a mode of transportation for those convention attendees who don't have a car, to get to the show and back for a small fee."

I just spoke with Geoff Downes over the weekend, and he has confirmed that he plans to be at YEStival in June. It is possible that he will be jamming with Steve at some point during the convention.

Only one person (on AMY) … seems to have discussed the sound difference between the two versions (OYE and the OYE Surround Sound re-release) on normal stereo systems, indicating that the surround sound OYE sounds richer on his (presumably stereo) computer speakers.
Partly out of curiosity, I purchased the surround sound OYE today even though I do not have a surround sound system. On my decent home system, the main difference I can tell is that there appears to be a bit more high-end info on the surround sound version. This means a bit 'brighter' sound, with cymbals, backing vox, certain keyboards and acoustic guitars being crisper and more audible in the mix. I prefer this effect, but it might not be for everyone, as the lead vocals do not stand out quite as much. In short, there is a difference in stereo, but not much really. Certainly not enough to shell out the $20 I paid for the new version. However, I don't feel bad about it, since I now have a version of OYE without that annoying 16 minutes of "nature sounds" at the end. I play cds on my changer on 'random' play a lot, and the new version is more suitable because of the omission of the silly hidden track.
Anyway, there you have it. I would be curious to hear it in surround sound, although others here have said that it isn't a big deal.

On some pages about Bush, there is a list of other UK bands who have made it big in the US, in which Yes are mentioned. It's at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/works/s3/bush/basildon.shtml
The article is out of date, referring to the AWWHS line up recording a new album and erroneously declares that Wakeman is the only one still living in Britain. (Wakeman technically doesn't live in Britain as he's on the Isle of Man, while Howe definitely does live here.)

There was a lengthy article about Europop in The Times (London) on Saturday 9 May (p. 8, by Dominic Kennedy), as that was the day of the Eurovision Song Contest. Much of the article focused on former Yes and Asia manager, Brian Lane, who now manages several Norwegian groups. To quote the article: "Mr Lane spotted the potential of Norway because Geoff Downes […] was married to a Norwegian and brought tapes of the native pop music to Britain." Lane had been intending to retire -- "[a]fter the Yes reunion tour in 1991-2, I had had enough," he says -- when he became interested in the Oslo scene. Lane continues: "After dealing with the Yeses and the Asias of the this world, it is nice to deal with people who don't take themselves that seriously; and I don't have to eat vegetarian food."

Did anybody watch "Le mag de Yes" yesterday on french channel MCM? It featured an interview and an acoustic performance. Does anybody know whether it will be re-shown on another date? I'd like to record it. Thanks

On my local station today they were advertising a YES concert recorded in SS from San Diego on the OYE tour. It's on The Superstar Concert Series and it starts earlier than it ussually does. Maybe it's longer than the 1 1\2 hour it usually lasts.
This show is distributed on CD to radio stations. You would have to find the station in your area which broadcast's the Super Star Concert Series in your locality. It's not on every week. This show could've been played any time this last week up to Sunday. Most rock stations in my area play their special programs on Sunday ( like King Buscuit Flower Hour ). Your best bet is to call your local rock stations or check out their website if they have one. I think it's distributed by Westwood One. It's on WONE ( 97.5 ) at 8:00 P.M. around here (Akron Ohio). This program is widely distributed and I'm sure if you live around a major market it will be on broadcast. Good luck, I'm going to have my cassette rolling. By the way, I distinctly heard the DJ say San Diego, I hope she wasn't wrong and that it's L.A. I've heard this concert advertised on other nationally syndicted shows (House of Blues ), but they never said which venue it was from. This will definately be SS and I hope we get some different songs than from the L.A. broadcast. I'm hoping for most of the show if they broadcast for more than the usual 1 1\2 hours.

So I'm sitting in a friends backyard sunday evening at a birthday cookout with a blaster tuned to the local rock fm, out of nowhere here comes live YES out of the box! By the time I got home and started the tape rolling (mad dash ignoring traffic signals) I had missed RoL and OYE (small loss). This was indeed a different show from the LA broadcast (better!)
Setlist:
Rythym of Love
Open Your Eyes
Heart of the Sunrise
From the Balcony
Long Distance Runaround
The Revealing Science of God
Owner of a Lonely Heart
I've Seen All Good People
Tape was mixed by Sherwood and he put Igor up front a bit, man the guy sounds absolutely great on RSoG! So much better than the KTA version...He seems more and more to be the man for the job. Jon's vocals seem to have a little too much reverb at first, but dried a bit as the show went on. HotS and RSoG were definate standouts! Sheer luck that I heard this show, NFTE and AMY you're falling down on the job! ;)

CD Universe has Relayer (Deluxe Package) coming out in June. Does anyone know what this is all about? Yeswolf, Nic ?
From Steven Sullivan (sullivan@gwis2.circ.gwu.edu) May 20, 1998
CD Universe lists both a 'limited edition' of Relayer (on Atlantic, along with fragile, CttE, and Tales -- these seem to be the releases announced in NFTE) and a 'Deluxe Package, for $2 more, also Japanese, but with the label listed as 'PID'. Confusing.

Guitar Shop (a gear oriented buyer's guide) has an informative interview with both Steve Howe and Chris Squire in July's issue entitled "Parallels: The Twin Titans of Yes Get Ready for a New Millenium". I found it very odd that the interview wasn't featured on the magazine cover; I would've passed over it completely if I hadn't been in the market for a pedalboard.
On that note, the article plunges deep into each Yesman's arsenal of guitars and effects ( what do you expect from a gear mag?), particularly as employed on OYE. Steve offers his perspectives on OYE and they seem to be mixed; though he is quite "sold" from Wonderlove onward (the highlight being for the moment "From The Balcony"), he suggests that the others "have more of other people's views, which isn't easy to live with, but you win some and you lose some." Steve was also asked what his favorite Yes track was to which he responded "To Be Over". He states "Yes has never been that powerful again."
In a separate piece, Broofsky offers an insightful 30 year retrospective on his collaborations with Yes, KC, and his latest with BLUE. He has nothing but praise for Steve and suggests he wouldn't mind working with him again in a "scaled down situation - maybe a trio." GO GET IT!
Oops...did I forget to mention anything about Chris? LOL
