Roger Dean Exhibit in London
From: trooper1129 - Nov. 1

Roger Dean is taking his exhibit to London.

The exhibition will run from Monday 12th November until Saturday 24th November 2001 at The Gallery in Cork Street in London's Mayfair. More information and contact details can be seen on his website: http://www.rogerdean.com/latest

I've seen the exhibit at 2 different galleries and if you are a Dean fan, it's worth stopping by.

Also worth noting is that Roger has a new item for sale on his website. Roger Dean Playing Cards with his flying machine logo on them. I picked up a few sets when I was at NEARfest and I even got the matching carved case, which he doesn't seem to be offering on his website. Too bad, because it was quite nice.

The cards are being offered now only to those on his email newsletter list and will be available for purchase by all on Dec 1st. A nice little stocking stuffer for any Yesfan. Check them out on: http://www.rogerdean.com/cards.htm

Roger Dean Exhibition in London
From: Woodworth, John (London) [WoodwJoh@exchange.uk.ml.com] - Nov. 14

I have just been to The Gallery in Cork St, London which currently has an exhibition of original Roger Dean paintings and limited addition prints. It was great to see the original paintings for Yessongs, Yesshows, Key to Ascension etc but the highlight was the original painting Roger did for Return to the Centre of the Earth. I can't remember the exact dimensions but it has to be close to 5 ft by 6 ft. Its very impressive. Asking price I think was £250,000 but I'm sure you could negotiate. Highly recommended show.

I went down and saw the Roger Dean Exhibition during the week. It is free to get into, so if you are in London before it ends on 24 November, it is well worth checking out.

It is especially worthwhile for us as the Return to the Centre of the Earth artwork is on display. It is a lot taller than the LP since it is probably in a ratio of 2 to 3. Basically EMI cut out some of the background caves and arches.

It has the following original art works on display and for sale if you have the odd £12,500-£250,000 laying around.

Octopus
Cave (Greenslade Hermit's Cave)
Awakening
Arrival
`Z' Dome At Night (Acoustically Driven)
Paladin
Magician's Birthday (2°d Panel Coloured)
The Sea Of Light
Blue Demon
Yesshows
Yellow City
Arches Splash
Space Needle
Centre Of The Earth
Rock Forms III
Rock Forms IV
Rock Forms V
Rock Forms VI
Dragons's garden

For completeness here is the list of the fine art prints on display and which are a bit more affordable ranging from £100-£950

Tales From Topographic Oceans
The Magician's Birthday (Black & White)
The Magician's Birthday (Colour)
The Yes Logo
Arches (Morning)
Arches (Mist)
Dragon's Garden I
Dragon's Garden II
Dragon's Garden III
Asia Eyes I-IVYes Dragonfly I-IV

I just read this news from the King Crimson News website
(http://www.krimson-news.com/) -

"Calyx is the Definitive Website on the Canterbury Music scene. Such ex-Crim members as Bill Bruford, Mel Collins, and Keith Tippett have pages on this site as they were part of this often neglicted genre of free-jazz/prog. A great place to explore and learn about a movement and a bunch of bands you will be happy to know about." http://perso.club-internet.fr/calyx

The site's section devoted to Bruford is really excellent. Check it out!

New Song added for Mag tour???
From: the_yes_crowd - Nov. 6

Go to the following links for pics taken near the stage in Helsinki. This appears to be lyric cheat sheets for the song "Magnification". It is also appears the band has been heard rehearsing the song as well per reports in Stockholm. Hopefully the band will play this song live soon. Here are the links and there are more live Yes pics there as well. Enjoy, chris :-)

Torbjörn's review of Yes in Europe

zyrp@odn.de wrote:

Well, since we've had a few gigs in Europe already I might throw in an observation or two. I'll make it brief as I have a more detailed review coming on a Scottish mailing list not far from you. :-)

Monday 5th.

As I had already got confirmed that Yes would attend our fan gathering on Tuesday, prior to the show, we were more or less happy as it was. Then I got a call from Paul S, tour manager, who asked if there wasn't anything happening that night, Monday, as the band was free and had nothing much to do. So we arranged a small, informal meeting at a pub not far from Yes hotel. We arrived at 9pm, Chris was supposed to arrive at 11pm, but the general joke was that he wouldn't show up until midnight or later. :-)

All of a sudden Jon and Jane appears at the pub and we are all able to have a short chat and have some signing done. Great!! Later on Gigi White (Alan White's wife) appears and tells us that Alan and Chris is outside the pub but they aren't let in because of - Chris ugly pants!! So we left and were invited to the hotel instead. Chris was sleeping, Steve was sleeping (most of the time, someone called him up and woke him! :-) ) Jon was sleeping but Alan and some friends of him were there at the Lobby Bar and chatted with us. In bed at 2.35am Tuesday morning.

Tuesday 6th.

The day of the fan gathering. After some contacts again with Paul we meet him at the place of our gathering and we work thru some minor details and he's off for some shopping. The gathering begins at 1pm and lots of fans (well, at least 125 of them) showed up. We mingled and talked and at 3pmYes walks in and the hall is filled with cheering people. They answered some Q's and sign some stuff before they leave at 3:45pm. We begin to get ready for the concert.

The concert was...stunning! Unbelievable! Outstanding! Yes looked a little tensed to begin with but as they got warmer they got more relaxed and gave us a great show. Having little to compare with (three shows in UK last year) I must admit that this was the best Yes concert I have seen!! Yes played excellent! We went crazy!! There were 3-5 minutes ovations between most of the songs; Jon could hardly get us to quiet down so he could speak to us. Songs like Gates and Ritual blew us off our feet and got the longest standing ovation I've ever seen in my entire life!! I don't think 5 minutes is enough! Jon clearly had tears in his eyes. After the last song (all good people) Yes went off stage and we began to clap for an encore. As we clapped we began to sing the chorus from "Time and a Word" over and over again. As Yes came back on stage they heard us singing. Steve's face cracked up in a huge smile and he grabbed his ES-175 and played along with us. Jon stepped up to the microphone and sang along too and suddenly Steve breaks into the opening of Roundabout!! It was truly a magic moment I and could see that both Steve and Jon was moved by our song. I didn't look at Alan and Chris at that moment but I know they were as moved as the others.

After the show we were invited again to the hotel and we sat there till very, very early in the morning before we went for bed.

Not much of a concert review but if I should say something more, it'd be like: The sound was good, Chris had some minor problems with his rig, The orchestra was not high in the mix, mostly drowned, but I guess you would've noticed if they stopped playing, Tom B did a marvelous job behind the keys, jumping up & down, the crowd was hilarious, hysterical, dedicated The reviews the days after was a disaster (which we knew before the concert, tell you more later)

That's about it for now. A more detailed will surface in this forum soon, but bot now.

The gig in Oslo, the night after, was reportedly, just as good.

Torbjorn Hk Chairman of the Swedish Yes Association
(who also got to sign things - to Alan!)

Magnification Bonus Disc
From Rayzilla99 - Nov. 13

I just took a look at Best Buy.com. They are taking pre-orders of "Magnification" and claim that a bonus disc will be included. According to Best Buy, the bonus disc contains "Long Distance Runaround w/Orchestra" and "Nous Sommes Du Soleil w/Orchestra." No official word from the band or Beyond Music...so use caution when ordering. See for yourself:

Magnification US Release
From: sunlight_caller - Nov. 20

I have just been reading the following on Henry's site. It seems the marketing men have gone a bit mad with the impending release. I was hoping for a new CD of live material, but I don't think I'll be buying all three (or actually any, seeing as I already have the UK release)! Do they really think this will sell more CD's, are they expecting the die hards to buy 3 copies each?

The US release (Beyond Music, 398 578 205-2) of Magnification has been delayed until 4 Dec. Details remain sketchy, but it appears that three different, limited edition, bonus versions of the album will be available through three different retailers: each will contain a bonus disc, the second track of which will always be the tour EP/Japanese bonus version of "Long Distance Runaround". The first bonus track varies, being a live version of

"Ritual" at Best Buy;
"The Gates of Delerium" at Trans World (presumably through FYE) or at Borders-don't know which yet; or "Close to the Edge" at the other of Trans World or Borders.

Only Best Buy are yet advertising their limited edition release, described as "featuring live versions of the songs Long Distance Runaround (With Orchestra) and Ritual-Nous Sommes Du Soleil (With Orchestra)". It appears that these three live tracks will come from the 19 Jul 2000 Holmdel, NJ, show on the Masterworks tour: Jordan Berliant, executive producer on Magnification and one of the band's managers, posted to alt.music.yes on 23 Sep that they were "working on a bonus disc that would contain the following 'epics' from the Masterworks tour: Gates[;] Ritual[;] Close To The Edge[.] Not sure if they will all be on one disc or whether certain retailers would get different bonus discs." (All of the Holmdel show was recorded and is available as a webcast at SFX; full set list-intro: Britten's "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra"; "Close to the Edge", "Starship Trooper", "Gates of Delirium", "Leaves of Green" ("The Ancient" excerpt), "Heart of the Sunrise", "Ritual", "I've Seen All Good People"; encore: "Roundabout". A live release of this show was planned, but seems to have since been abandoned. At one stage, material from this show-probably "Gates of Delirium"-was to have been used on the tour EP, but that idea too was dropped.) However, if the bonus tracks come from Holmdel, that leaves unexplained why Best Buy are advertising "Ritual" as being with an orchestra. That may either be a mistake; or orchestral accompaniment may have been overdubbed (as happened with the bonus version of "Long Distance Runaround"); or the track(s) may be sourced from the Yessymphonic tour. (Note also that some online retailers are also advertising an import of the Japanese release with its one bonus track of "Long Distance Runaround".)

Magnification US Release - Official
From: Rayzilla99 - Nov. 20

Brother Chris,
Sad but true. Here's the official word from Yesworld:

"Magnification is due to be released in the U.S. on December 4. When you purchase a copy from one of the outlets below you'll receive a live bonus disc available only through that store, while supplies last."

BORDERS
1. Close To The Edge (live from the Masterworks tour) 20:26
2. Long Distance Runaround (live with orchestra) 3:50

BEST BUY
1. Ritual-Nous Sommes Du Soleil (live from the Masterworks tour) 28:05
2. Long Distance Runaround (live with orchestra) 3:50

TRANSWORLD
1. Gates of Delirium (live from the Masterworks tour) 22:43
2. Long Distance Runaround (live with orchestra) 3:50

I can only speak for myself when I say that I will not be buying 3 copies of "Magnification." Effective marketing tactics should rally the troops, not anger them. What Beyond Music fails to understand is that for the most part the YES fan base is an older and wiser demographic. We are seasoned consumers who can smell a scam a mile away unlike impressionable teens with no bills to pay and disposable incomes. The press release says that we should buy these "while supplies last"...I get the feeling there will be more than enough to go around.

"The moments...seem lost in all the noise..."

I still haven't gotten the Squire painting on there. It's as good as the other boys. And I need a good photo of Alan White to finish the set if anyone has one they would be willing to give me- with no copyrights attached, I'd be open to seeing if there's another portrait I can add.
