Vol. 5, No. 14 - November 1998
There is an article in November's Q magazine about the director VincentGallo. The following is the article: Gallo's remorseless efforts to shock, however, extend to those he admires. The soundtrack of "Buffalo 66" employs the prog rock sounds of King Crimson and Yes. Gallo clearly has something of a fixation with the permanently unfashionable purveyors of Tales From topographic oceans. " The single most exciting day of my life was the day Chris Squire, the bass player from Yes, invited me to dinner. The second most exciting day of my life was when I met Jon Anderson of Yes. The third was when I met Richard Nixon."
Music Street Journal 10 is online now. The issue features the following new reviews: Yes-Friends and Relatives, Boud Deun-The Stolen Bicycle, Shadow Gallery-Tyranny (progressive metal) and Black Sabbath-Reunion (non- progressive). The flashback reviews for the month are the various artists Genesis tribute Supper`s Ready, Fight-A Small Deadly Space (progressive metal) and The Craft Soundtrack (non progressive). Indie mania continues this month with Senses-Fields Unsown, Money For The Toll-Do`s Cup of Tea and Ron Wright-Acoustic Dreams.

i mentioned this once to somebody, so i apologize if it appears repetitive: jon had mentioned that he signed a release form with eagle that allowed a remix version of "owner" to be released on an upcoming compilation album. the only requirement jon made from eagle was that they allow his children to sing backing vocals on the track. but like most record companies'
relationship with their artists, they ignored jon's request and released it with unknown singers. i do not know whether or not there was a deadline to meet and jon failed to notify eagle, but this version of "owner" is solely jon's doing. i only know this because i asked him to sign the cd at an in-store appearance and he proceeded to tell me the details.

Check out Pete Whipple's most EXCELLENT site, it's got setlists and reviews for many shows from 1969 to present, as well as TONS of pics, tourbook photos and flyers for Yes shows.
The latest Artist Shop newsletter is out and you'll find it in its entirety at http://www.artist-shop.com/news.htm.
[An] interesting item in my import pre-order section:
YES-CLOSE TO THE EDGE (book)
Documentary of the band's 30 year career via interviews with all of the band members both past and present. 200 pages, illustrated with black and white photos.
[This] last item will obviously be the thing of most interest to Yes fans. Unfortunately I have neither a release date nor an author on it, just the info above. Does anyone else know any more about this?
Spread the word.

Did I ever tell the list my story of the Hard Rock Cafe in Beijing? Alone in China is a horrible thing to be. I was soooooo lonely, and after about a week in the city (going nutso), I was going shopping at a multi-leveled antique store with one of my interpreters, and on the way there, she pointed out the Hard Rock to me. She said, "oh, you should go there for dinner tonight". So I did! It was great. Sat at the bar, talked to some guy named Bob from Michigan. He was telling me all sorts of stories about his hotel (the hookers out front.... ooops, I digress).
What I wanted to tell you was that, I went back the next night. And this time, actually Looked Up at the Guitars & pictures & stuff. Turns out I was sitting underneath Steve Howe's guitar! And Trevor Rabin's guitar. They were placed next to each other. Don't know if we should inform Steve or not about that! :)
Steve's guitar was, like, its body had a circle of steel with circles cut out on it. (hard to describe and I can't draw here.) And two steel circles above it, still on the body.
Trev's guitar was blue.
There was a picture of the Talk line up, one that I once owned, and had given to an Italian friend. (My Talk picture had more autographs on it that the one at the H.R.) A Roger Dean poster of ?. A pic of Steve playing a Gibson, and a Yesterdays poster. Steve's picture was not signed.
Well, now ya know what Yes stuff is at the H.R. in Beijing! :) And you heard it here first on Southside.

"All right you European guys! What's all this talk about the Scottish Yes Network? Is that along the lines of the Immaculate Order of Yessuckers? Or is it a more formal thing? If more formal, what is it? Newsletter? Fan Club? Other?"
Yes, it's a monthly newsletter (very informal) which I send to around 30 Yesfriends in Scotland. It's also a local trading forum, and we occasionally get together for for Yesnights.
The acronym SYN is in honour of Chris. When he came to our after-show party in Edinburgh's Cafe Royale in April, he saw all the assembled fans in Yesgear, the Yesposters on the wall, the Fox After Breakfast show on the Pub's giant video screen, and said "Oh is this a Scottish YES Convention?" I thought "SYN" sounded better than "SYC", and is of course more appropriate
to our Honorary Founder. The next major excursion is in January, when we all go down to London, for Rick's "Return".
We do have a fairly stringent membership policy.
1. You must be a Yesfan.
2. You must be Scottish.
We do have some exceptions, though.
Glen is from Norway, but his mother is Scottish.
Torbjorn is Swedish, but he likes Whisky.
Rhea is American, but she has a Kilt.
Unfortunately, we have been infiltrated by some of those English types, but we tolerate them because they have some really interesting stuff to trade.
;~)
Regards, Brian

I find these reviews in the Triumivrat mailing list and thought you folks might enjoy them:
Unfortunately, there will not be an east coast earthworks tour because B.L.U.E. (the bruford-levin-torn-botti project) will instead be playing the east coast for a second time. this is based mostly on bruford's schedule says tony levin. but levin also states that the record label (EEG i would assume) does not want bruford playing twice on the west; as a result, we in
the west get earthworks, and you in the east get B.L.U.E. twice! i can't believe that bruford's record label would actually think that his fans would attend one or the other and not both.
The Igor Khoroshev Web Site at Yeshoo! has recently celebrated it's first birthday. To mark this occasion, Igor has decided to give us ALL a gift...
We're proud to debut five solo piano pieces recorded by Igor, now available as .MP3 files at the site! (RealAudio streaming versions coming soon)
(click on the "Music" link)
These amazing performances include four original pieces (including the solo piece he's been doing live with Yes) as well as a rendition of "Barbarian", which Igor will perform on the upcoming ELP tribute album. The works preview some of the music that will appear on his upcoming solo piano release.
Oh, and check out the little surprise at the end of his piece titled "The Sea"...

I have Jon Anderson's "Three Ships" CD on auction at Ebay. Check it out if you want to get a copy of this hard to find release.
Here's the latest news on what Yes is doing right now..... ( Thanks Steve ! )
Yes To Head Into Studio With Fairbairn
Esprit has some interesting new Yesstock. (I already bought the Three Ships promo LP.)
The Change We Must item is greatly reduced. I have seem this at UK120.0O previously. (maybe that was autographed - can't remember). (probably still a rip-off though).
In today's mtv news web site, there is a bit piece on plans for the new yes album.
Scotthish YES Network - Newsflash - Rick on "This is your Life"
Last week Rick received Michael Aspel's Big Red Book as the "Victim" on "This is your Life".
(Didn't Rick write and play the Music for "Ask Aspel" all those years ago?).
Someone on amy asked about Patrick's upcoming CD. I was fortunate enough to have seen him over the weekend, so here is a brief status report:
Patrick is still working on the new CD. He has no expected date of completion. "It will be ready when it is ready." Actually, he is working on 2 CDs, one of them acoustic ala Windows of Time. That one may actually be released first. I heard a good portion of the material for both albums over the weekend, and it is
incredible! Trust me, it will be worth the wait! He plans on doing a substantial tour with a band when the album is completed.
He also taped a promo video for Baldwin last Monday. It was a 5 camera shoot on a 9 foot piano, and he was pretty excited about it. He said it will be available on VHS, DVD, and, later - holograms. It was a long piece partly consisting of reworked segments from Human Interface.
He has been doing a number of clinics around the country for Baldwin recently too. I told him to let us know in advance so that some of us might be able to attend!
Yes and Genesis will appear on Sky Digital's new Classic Rock Channel at 9pm on 18th December. The programme is titled
"The Creators of Progressive Rock".
Rick has already recorded a Christmas Special for "Never Mind the
Buzzcocks".
Did anyone catch this..
On "Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast" Friday night, Spacie had to leave his talk show guest to go to his guitar lesson. In the background, you could hear Spacie butchering the beginning strains of "Roundabout" (Steve's acoustic bit). I was HIGHLY amused - a little Yes reference on Space Ghost! (For those who don't know, SGC2C is a cartoon show on Friday nights on the Cartoon Network - quirky and fun, an adult cartoon really).
Then I was listening to some talk radio today in my car. On WRKO here in Boston, the Andy Moes show, they played "Five Percent for Nothing" just as they were coming back from a commercial break. I could hardly contain myself! When was the last time you heard THAT on the radio?
I wonder what I'll hear tomorrow!

From Dave Gallant's new issue of the Asia Newsletter, The Armada:
"This issue is jam-packed with news worthy of an issue #200. First off, I'd like to announce a reformation of the BUGGLES ... sort-of. In the past few weeks, Geoff and Trevor Horn were approached for an interview with People magazine. The interview would highlight the 20th anniversary of "Video Killed The Radio Star", in 1999. As a result, Trevor suggested that the two get together on stage in London next week. Nothing fancy, but historic in that it would be their first show ever as a duo. I have the tentative date and location, but I need to confirm it 100% with Geoff. I'll try to get that information out by the first of the week.**

Thanks to Henry Potts for helping with the exact address of
the venue on this one. When Geoff told me about it a few days
ago, I was a little reluctant to print the exact details.
Sounded like it could have been a private affair. But now,
the details are on the web. Check out this link
You might have to do a little copying and pasting to get the whole thing into your browser. For quicker details, here's what is basically says:
ZTT Showcase - Buggles, Lee Griffiths, The Marbles,
Headspace, The Frame
Dec 3, 8pm, £5
Venue: Mean Fiddler (details):
22-28A Harlesden High Street, NW10 4LX, LONDON
0181 961 5490
nearest train station: Willesden Junction
Geoff wasn't sure exactly where it would all lead to, but
said it was going to be fun for sure. To quote him exactly,
he said, "Not bad for a couple of old guys - it only took
us 20 years to get our first gig!"
If *anyone* gets to this show, I think many people would be
grateful for a full accounting on the Armada. I'd die for
some pics for the Asia book. Or a tape of the show (PLEASE!!!!): )
........is now BLACK! Yep, that's right, he dyed it black. Thought you'd be interested in knowing that. :-)

Thought you may like to see the latest ''Tiz-emailshot'' sent to subscribers of the magazine of The 'Yes' Music Circle, international supporters club!
4 topics :
(1)... Tonight on BBC1 television Rick Wakeman is the subject of 'This Is Your Life' (7.00-7.30pm GMT). Chris Squire, Jon Anderson and Steve Howe make comments about Rick, as do comedian friends including Jim Davidson.
After seeing it, you will be welcome to express your opinion - for use in 'Yes Music Circle'!
(2)... Geoff Downes & Trevor Horn reunite this coming Thursday (3 Dec) to perform a little Buggles music at the ZTT music label showcase at the Mean Fiddler :
22-28A Harlesden High Street, LONDON NW10
Telephone 0181 961 5490
Tickets £5 pounds. 8pm start
Nearest train station: Willesden Junction
Also set to perform will be acts named Lee Griffiths, The Marbles, Headspace, The Frames.
(3)... Rick Wakeman's 'Return To The Centre of the Earth' is to have its world premiere (in part) during his interview on Talk Radio with Nicky Horne. Yesterday I spoke on-air with Nicky who said this may take place as early as Sunday, 12 December. The interview spot is 7-8pm GMT in the Nicky Horne Sunday show (which now starts at 5pm) on 1053 & 1089 Medium Wave throughout the UK. Obviously, date of broadcast may be postponed if mixing
of the album decrees!
(4)... Johnnie Walker welcomes suggestions for his Saturday show on BBC Radio 2 (3.30-5.30pm GMT) for the *featured album* facility, whereby 3 tracks are aired, 1 near the start of the show, 1 in the middle & 1 at the end. In his latest show, Johnnie featured Meatloaf's 'Bat Out of Hell'. Maybe not to Yes/progressive enthusiasts' taste, but a clear indication
Radio 2 is adjusting its music schedule to appeal to younger listeners!
Johnnie concluded Meatloaf's title track, saying ''This is probably the only radio station in the UK where they would play 9 minutes & 50 seconds of MEATLOAF!" The BBC website biography of Johnnie Walker says the reason he lost his Radio 1 job in 1976 was because he insisted on playing album tracks! Clearly, album tracks - & specifically lengthy album tracks - are precisely what needs to be acceptable on Radio 2 for the likes of you & me to hear some Yes-music introduced to the general public. (Hence greater album sales with future band & solo releases...leads to more Yes gigs!)
Can I urge you, please, to e-mail Johnnie walker asking for 'Going For The One' as the *featured album* in his Saturday show, soon? It seems the most suitable for Radio 2, perhaps with 'Wonderous Stories' at the start of the show, 'Parallels' in the middle, & the sublime 'Turn of the Century' to conclude the show! Johnnie Walker's e-mail address is :
jw@bbc.co.uk
In Johnnie Walker's Monday-Thursday Radio 2 show (5-7pm GMT) last week he aired 'Excerpt From a Teenage Opera' by Steve Howe's Tomorrow colleague Keith West. Also, 'Light' by Journey. I like them! If you don't, why not e-mail Johnnie asking for artists whose music you do enjoy?!
Hope you find these messages useful...?!
Happy listening (& viewing),
Tiz

P S ~ Subscribers resident beyond the BBC Radio 2 broadcast region can still help! You could e-mail Johnnie Walker requesting one of the 'Going For The One' tracks be dedicated from you to someone you know who lives in the UK (a friend, relative or fellow Yes-music enthusiast!) Thanks if you do help!
Just a quick note to anyone interested...
If you have Direct TV...DSS music station 513 "classic rock plays killer old, obscure tunes from many different groups from the 60's, 70's and 80's. Many of older, non-radio album cuts and many Yes songs. If I have it on for 5 hours or more while working at home, I will always hear at least 3 or 4 Yes songs and other Yes members groups...Asia, ABWH. It's great! CD quality sound, no talk or voice over and ya never know what Yes song you'll hear.
Still shocks me when I hear Perpetual Change, And You And I or Southside of the Sky on the "radio!"
