Possible New Yes Box Set

From: Rene Lester [luvernelib@fcbl.net] - Oct 6

At lunch today, Jimmy called Skip, the DJ from Montgomery's own WXFX Classic Rock radio, and asked for the details concerning the new Yes boxset. As you might suspect, Skip can't reveal his sources. What he did say, was that his sources are folks in a couple of the record companies and that they do from time to time tell certain "trustworthy" DJs about upcoming releases way in advance.

When Jimmy mentioned Dave's point about so many (5 I think) record labels being involved, Skip said, Yes, this is what is happening with the Yes box set. He said the industry term used, is "in the works" and that he has been told that the Yes boxset is "in the works" and should be released December or early January 2001. Jon, Chris and Trevor R. are the 3 Yesmen who will be approached (or have been approached) to work on this project and that we can expect some YesWest music.

Skip went on to explain that this is the 4th quarter and all record companies are announcing their plans for the end of the year, but it is also a tentative time in the industry as the bottom line is always money and that some folks (i.e. the very ones working on the Yes boxset) could well be laid off prior to the end of the year, causing a delay or halt to the release. He pointed out that the Eagles boxset has been "in the works" for 3 years now.

Finally, Jimmy surmised that Skip (who has family in Luverne BTW) isn't really as big a Yes fan as originally thought. Instead, Skip believes in helping the underdog whenever possible. He told Jimmy that he plays from TYA or 90125 as often as he can because it might help the band and it follows his format. He said Pink Floyd will sell a 100K copies of Dark Side of the Moon a year without any help from radio, but Yes isn't like that. Unfortunately, he had trouble giving away his station's 10 demo copies of the Ladder.

So I can see now why Yesworld hasn't released this news if their policy dictates no news on releases that are "in the works," especially when so much can go wrong between now and then. But when a credible DJ talks about it on the air, to me, the newsworthiness has been established, and the fans should be made aware of the possibility of a new recording. After all, we (the hardcore fanatics), are the ones who will be buying it...not new fans.

We've talked about this before that as fans we still need to do our part in promoting our favorite band. I think Jimmy and I will try to take Skip out for a beer sometime when we're in Montgomery and see what we can do to further encourage him to keep Yes on the radio and in the news, (and maybe pump him for some more info, [vbg]).

Have a good weekend everyone!
Life is good,
Rene

Steve Howe at Renfrew Ferry, Glasgow - SETLIST SPOILER

From: Brian Neeson [yescelt@aol.com] - Oct 8

I just sent a review of Steve's Friday show to SYN Members. Herte it is. Note there are Setlist Spoliers

Around a dozen SYN Members and friends turned up for Steve Howe at Renfrew Ferry, Glasgow on Friday night. Renfrew Ferry is the boat which used to Ferry passengers across the River Clyde in Glasgow many years ago. It is now a Pub, and Concert Venue. The Lower deck holds a small stage, and seats around 70 people at tables. Another 70 can stand, while the stage can be viewed around the sides of the Upper deck. There were around 200 at Steve Howe's show on Friday 6th October. I was able to find a table two rows back from the stage.

Steve took the stage around 8pm, and apologised for having to tune-up, even although he had already done so around 1 hour earlier. "It's so bloomin' cold in here, I want it to sound just right for you". "You could make a ****in' banana sound good, Steve" set the tone for the night, as Steve bantered, even competed with the good-natured heckling during the gaps between songs.

The set was split fairly evenly with Classical type pieces in the first half, and Country pickin' in the second, interspersed with some light Jazz. The opening half included old favourites such as Corkscrew, Surface Tension and Beginnings, as well as new Material such as Rhythm of The Road from Homebrew 2 (part of which appears on That, That Is), and Night Trade from the forthcoming "Yes - Friends and Relatives 2" album. It was not clear if Steve said "Night Train" or "Night Trade". I figured the latter, as he probably would not use a title already used by another Yes guitarist.

Steve commented that his family originally came from Scotland. Of course that played right into the Audience's hands "That's why you're so ****in' Good" was the response. Steve accepted that he could not win this friendly duel.

In the intro to Surface Tension Steve recounted a tale of a radio show which he appeared on with Ralph McTell and Bert Weedon. He revealed that Mr Weedon offerd to sell everyone his home-made Marmalde after the show. "Imagine having that as your Merchandise ..Marmalade". He mentioned this story as "Surface Tension" he considered to be his "London" song, and Ralph McTell's greatest hit is of course "Streets of London". Just before Leaves of Green, Steve mentioned that he hoped that Yes might bring Masterworks to Scotland, but he couldn't promise. The first half lasted 45 minutes, and ended with "Mood for a Day".

The second half opened with some light jazz "Sweet Thunder" and "Dorothy", and then moved on to some country pieces. Steve was using a new "Blonde Jumbo-type" semi-acoustic for these numbers. I couldn't make out the Model, but it was apparently recommended to him by Martin Taylor, THE Scottish Guitarist. (Steve produced Taylor's album "Artistry). "Does anyone here not know who Martin Taylor is?", was for the first time in the night met with stony silence, a short pause then a sole voice right above Steve said "I've got Martin Taylor's autograph". This reduced Steve to giggles.

The second half set included Ram, Second Initial and Winter. Unfortunately the "Ferry" had another function after Steve's show, and the Ceilidh participants who arrived during the second set made rather a lot of noise. Steve did not have to complain about this. A SYN member sitting quite close to me suggested in Classic Glasgow fashion that he would rather they lowered their voices. "Not to put TOO fine a point on it" remarked Steve. The second half closed with Valley of the Rocks, and Clap. The encore comprised two Slide Guitar pieces , Running in the Human Race, and Soon.

The full setlist was as follows - with a couple of omissions.

Beginnings
Heritage
All's a Chord
Corkscrew
Surface Tension
Night Trade
Rhythm of the Road
Leaves of Green
Classical Gas
Mood for a Day

Sweet Thunder
Dorothy
Ram
Second Initial
Winter
Masquerade
Cactus Boogie
From the Balcony
Valley of the Rocks
Clap

Running in the Human Race

Chronicles Of Man has release date

From: Graham Johnson [ggj@dircon.co.uk] - Oct 11

Just thought I'd note that Chronicles Of Man now has a UK release date of 16th October 2000. Amazon.co.uk list it for £11.99 (plus postage of course). This still works out less than President Records sell it for themselves.

I just finished taping, direct to digital, tonight's Joe Benson's "Off The Record" which featured Chris Squire. I am going to edit it tomorrow afternoon and hopefully post it up on my website, which is at http://i.am/DLogic

The only new item for me (that I recall at this time) came at the very end. I had to listen to it a few times. Uncle Joe B. asked about Billy Sherwood recording with YES again. Chris answered that it will just be Jon, Chris, Steve, and Alan on this next album, which they will start recording next month. He made a point to say there would be no keyboards at this time, at least not at this stage in the project.

Jon.... in BRASIL!

From: Mohallem [dudum@uol.com.br] - Oct. 21 there was an ad today in the biggest newspaper in Brasil. It was an half-page ad consisting of big letters where we could read: "BRITISH ROCK SYMPHONY - The Biggest Celebration of Rock

A band formed by, amongst others: Alice Cooper, Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet), Alan Parsons, Orchestra and Jon Anderson. Singing songs by The Who, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Rolling Stones."

And Howe

From: Paul Bartek [pbartek@buffnet.net] - Oct 15

That's the headline of the following teaser published in the "Gusto" section of last Friday's Buffalo News. It was almost a sixth of a page and featured a photo of Steve smiling over the upturned neck of a six-string Gibson. I'm really looking forward to the show because the Tralf is a great venue (small club) to see a show.

Like all good YesTalkers worldwide, my friends and I will start the evening across the street at the Empire Brew Pub in order to get in the right frame of mind (and body).

As often quoted on these pages: "Life is good"

And Howe

During the early '70s, Steve Howe and Yes helped push progressive rock into the mainstream. Howe teamed with bandmate Jon Anderson to write material for Yes, and they hit the big time with a song called "Roundabout." Even as Yes continued as a musical force throughout that decade, Howe found time for a couple of solo albums.

Musically, Howe was constantly exploring new sounds, displaying jazz and classical influences. He formed the band Asia in the '80s and had a string of hits, including "Heat of the Moment" and "Only Time Will Tell." He played with other bands until five years ago when he joined up with a reunited Yes for occasional dates.

Whether reviving Yes or going solo, Howe is a guitarist who just has to make music. Today, he offers everything from new age to acoustic to electronic music, and just about everything in between. Fans can listen for themselves when Howe performs at 9PM Tuesday in the Tralf, 622 Main St. Tickets at $15 in advance and $17 at the door. For information, call 851-8725

Roger Dean to appear at NEARfest2001

From: NEARfest [rob@nearfest.com] - Oct 27

Roger Dean to Appear at NEARfest 2001...
We are very excited to announce that world-famous artist Roger Dean will be appearing at NEARfest 2001. Roger is known world over for his stunning, ethereal album covers for progressive and classic rock bands such as Yes, Gentle Giant, Asia, ABWH and Uriah Heep, just to name a few. Some of his most famous works were created for Yes' "Tales from Topographic Oceans" (fish over the desert) and Asia's debut album (rising dragon from the sea), not to mention each band's respective logos. Roger will be displaying many of his works in the mezzanine of Baker Hall at NEARfest 2001. He will no doubt have prints and other merchandise with him for sale.

In addition, Roger will be designing the 2001 edition of the NEARfest logo which will be used on our official programs and t-shirts! The participation of such a world class artist such as Roger is monumental for NEARfest and it is certainly an honor to have his endorsement and support. A million thanks to Jud Patterson for making this happen.

We should have an important band announcement next week! Stay tuned!

Peace
