Rock Family Trees

From: Cloke Peter (PCloke@bciplc.com) - October 2

This series on BBC2 continues tonight with a programme dedicated to Progressive Rock, the review I read last night refers to Yes and ELP and warns people to look out for 'Hair as long as Rapunzles' and songs that you have grown older with. I'm sorry but I can't remember the exact time of the broadcast. It also mentions an episode with Rick Wakeman when he didn't recognise Salvador Dali and threw him off stage, still his taste in art always was a bit dodgy!! :O)) (I understand Wakeman now collects fountain pens, and could be seen waxing lyrical about one on a BBC antique programme earlier this week) did someone lend him an anorak?? :O))

From: Jane Armstrong (janea@tgis.co.uk) - October 3

I've just had a wonderful time wallowing in nostalgia! Rock Family Trees traced the Prog Rock movement from the origins of ELP and Yes to the present day, following all the ins and outs of the various members. It was great!!!! There was so much old footage which I'd never seen before, interviews with various band members on their memories of the times, and layouts of old Melody Makers and LP covers. And the sad thing was I still have some of those old newspapers and actually have all but one of the LPs (an Earthworks one) I rarely play vinyl as the record player is on it's last legs, but this made me want to dig out all those old 12 inchers and admire the wonderful artwork and inserts. I just don't feel the same way about CD's. I used to rush home and study every inch of my LP cover, read all the lyrics, look at the booklets some of them had inside, read all the credits. I was almost as excited about the cover as I was about the music. A CD doesn't have the same appeal. And besides, these old eyes can't cope with the minuscule writing on a CD cover!

It made me remember how much I loved ELP and Yes in the 70's and how they have influenced my life, and how much I STILL love the music. And there was a wonderful shot of Keith with his parrot at the end!

Moraz in Boston on Oct. 3

From: Roy DeRousse (roylayer@yahoo.com) - Oct. 3

I stumbled across this quite by accident today:

Free Outdoor Concert featuring Entrain, Bim Skala Bim, Patrick Moraz and more at Marketplace Center (near Faneuil Hall) ~ October 3rd...

Yes on Westwood One

From: "Scott J." (GSJOHN00@UKCC.uky.edu) - October 5

The subject line says it all. Tonight Westwood One broadcasted a YES concert in Surround Sound. The one catch was that you had to be listening to the show on a surround sound entertainment center to get the full effect. The show was recorded at the San Diego Civic Center during their last tour. Lots of classic hits mixed with a several new songs - all in all a great show.

New Yes Book from Chris Welch

From: Dave McMann (dave@libs.enterprise-plc.com) - October 3

Chris Welch has a book out on Yes in January, looks like it will be good. Mail me for more details as I don't want to waste bandwidth.

BBC Radio 3 - Story of Prog Rock

From: Brian Neeson - October 9

Rick is on Radio 3 as I write this, speaking with Gone but Not Forgotten in the background.....(of course I am taping it!!). Keith Emerson has just explained that the famous carpets on stage were to prevent Greg Lake getting a shock when his lips touched the Mike. Now playing "Arena" - this sounds pretty good - can anyone recommend a larger sample? ...just gone on to talk about Jaberwocky (w/Oliver Wakeman as I sign off).

News from The Artist Shop

From: Gary Davis (artshop@artist-shop.com) - October 21

Hello Friends!

Lots of new things going on. I may have to split the newsletter in two again ;-) Also, with so much new stuff added, the Jukebox has had a lot of new soundbites added to it.

And now made available to us through Mark J. T. Griffin, author of the biography Vangelis - The Unknown Man, are two CD's from Vangelis close associates Raphael Preston and Bill Marshall. Many Vangelis fans will recognize Raphael Preston's name as being the engineer credited on quite a number of Vangelis and Jon & Vangelis albums and is one of the few performers to actually play on a Vangelis album (which he did on 1492 and a number of others!). While Bill Marshall's name has not been as visible, he has certainly played a large role in the development of Vangelis' sound as he was the inventor of the 'Direct Box,' an electronic device which has become integral to Vangelis' performance and composition technique for over a decade now. In fact, it has been such a valuable tool to Vangelis that he made exlusive arrangements with Bill. And so Bill Marshall and Vangelis are the only two people on the Earth that have the infamous 'Direct Box!' You'll find these at right below Griffin's biography.

Anderson on radio show

From David: Dblspace@aol.com - 0ctober 19

Last night driving I picked up a radio show called "Reelin in the Years" and at the end of the show they promoted next week's show - played on MY local station from 11-12 midnight in the central time zone on Sunday. (YMMV) This coming Sunday night there is to be music and interviews with Jon.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

From David: Dblspace@aol.com - October 26

Just to follow up - Jon discussed how Steve introduced the band to Roger Dean's work; Jon's initial reaction was that of "we want this art for our stage, stationary, and album covers!." Nice the way things worked out. And it may account for why no Yes album without Steve possesses Dean artwork (and why Dean is seen *almost* excluseively on his Howe's solo works).

...and the good news is that Roger is designing the album cover and stage set for Rick's "Return". How many Southsiders are going to London on 16th January for the premiere?

Gibson guitars

From: ANDRO (andrej.stolfa@NUK.Uni-Lj.Si) October 20

YESterday evening I was watching tv (Slovenia 1) and instead of some regular music show they transmitted some Canadian TV emission about Gibson guitars.

My attention was caught at the very beginning since the second guitar player who spoke was Steve Howe. At first I saw Slash speaking of how he takes his guitar everywhere he goes and then I couldnt belive my eyes. It was Steve, surrounded with his guitars, with one in his hands and he was speaking how some very long time ago he actually slept with his guitar (I assume it was back when he did not have so many guitars). It was after some show and he was afraid someone not to steal his guitar so he took it into his bed.

After Steves quote there was the whole story about Gibson guitars told by the inventors and guitarists (like Les Paul, BB King, Tony Iommi...), and then again Steve saying how the guitar player must have different guitars for different sounds and how he must develop special relationship vith every different guitar he plays and that is why he is travelling with so many guitars. And during his talking they went to show a very beginning of Roundabout from Yessongs.

I need to say that I went totally nuts (YES on Slovenia 1 TV!!!). I jumped around the room in pure happiness.

The show lasted 1 hour and at the end there was also Chet Atkins speaking and playing and then my not-so-yes-crazy-yet girfriend said: -Listen, he is playing acoustic guitar like your Steve Howe, and I said to her, that he was one of Steves influences, and I congratulted her for (sorry, mistake: I wanted to say it was played very similar to Clap)).

Sorry for I was so long but as non-english speaking person I have some difficulties with describing things...

Enjoy in your Yesness,
Andrej

Igor's websites on NFTE and Yeshoo

From: "Yeshoo!" (yeshoo@princeton.nj.com) October 22

>You can hear a little bit of Igor's work, "Urban Nocturne" from the
>Cakewalk 6 demos, on his new NFTE page at
>http://www.nfte.org/IgorK/music/mus.html (in some weird streaming >Java format) or a better quality but edited downloadable version at
>http://www.geocities.com/~yeshoo/ikmusic.htm which is the page he >runs with Yeshoo. (Not sure which site is 'official' since neither >one claims to be, and he works with both.) Urban Nocturne sounds a >little on the progmetal side IMO but is very nice.

Hey Rob and all,

To clear it up - the NFTE site IS 'official' in that it's run by the Official Yes internet organization (NFTE/YesWorld - IMHO, they do a great job, 'props' all around).

The original Igor Khoroshev Web Site (at Yeshoo!) is not 'officially' sanctioned - I put it up a year ago as a "fan site" to fill the gaping need for Igor info when he first hooked up with the band...

But, it has since taken on a quasi-official status, since Igor has personally contributed quite a bit and has had an ongoing, active role in helping me with the site's evolution. [ LOL - A quasi-official site for a quasi-official Yes member! ;) ]

And now, the NFTE site has (quite nicely!) duplicated a lot of the structure and content of the original IKWS. Since Igor doesn't need two nearly identical web sites, I'm planning a substantial re-design of the IKWS, working with Igor to target areas that the NFTE 'Official' site doesn't cover - along with continuing to provide the standard stuff. Stay tuned, and suggestions are welcome.

Also, to publicly answer a private e-mail question I received - YES, any fan mail sent to the IK web site (via igor.khoroshev@usa.net) absolutely DOES get immediately forwarded to Igor!

BTW - You mentioned the streaming Java audio - so it's not only me? No matter what I try, I can never get that $%#!@& Emblaze stuff to work.

John A

Yesworld survey

From mark Fugit: (Her3yes@webtv.net) October 26

Asia is in the process of putting out a new album with a great guitarist by the name of Ian Crichton from SAGA. From what I've heard there is suppose to be an epic piece on it?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Geoff is going to work with Peter Banks on an album with new versions of songs from Drama an T&aW.

There is also work on a Wetton/Downes CD.

Geoff also has a CD out with Glenn Hughes called Achive tapes I think. Glenn also does a nice job of singing VKtRS on Geoff's Vox Humana CD.

Next Yes album

From Ty Perry (ty@e-corp.com) October 26

actually, i just looked Bruce Fairbairn up at the all-music guide. here's some of who he's produced:

Loverboy (early 80s: "Turn Me Loose", "Working for the Weekend")
Bon Jovi's _Slippery_When_Wet_ ("You Give Love a Bad Name", "Living on a Prayer")
Aerosmith (late 80s - 90s: "Dude Looks Like a Lady", "Love in an Elevator", "Crazy")
AC/DC's _The_Razor's_Edge_ ("Thunderstruck", "Money Talks")
Poison's _Flesh_and_Blood_ ("Unskinny Bop", "Something to Believe In")
Van Halen's _Balance_ (last album w/ Sammy Hagar; i'm not familiar with this album)
Cranberries' _To_The_Faithful_Departed_ ("Salvation", "Free to Decide")

he's also associated w/ the Twister soundtrack, which (i'm not sure) Trevor Rabin is associated with also.

so now, the question of the day is
WHY Bruce Fairbairn??????

Lilies in the Field

From: YESChef@aol.com - October 23

For those who enjoy the hunt: Annie Haslam & Steve Howe; Lily's in the Field. TCG Records # CD12195.

CD Single

Good Luck, I was told I have the very last copy YesMagazine had. And they told me it was out of stock, it is out of print. I have no clue as howe to find one.

Good depth to the instruments, thunder sheets, Good acoustic weaving by Steve. Haunting effect by Annie. I'd give it about a 78.

Not bad.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

From: Rhea Frankel October 23

This was originally for sale at the Lily's in the Field concert. They only pressed 1000 copies, and I think they hoped to sell them all at the show. I bought several copies for friends, and everyone wanted one. This song will be on the Haslam/Howe album when it eventually gets released.

FAQ: Igor Khoroshev news

From: h.potts@icrf.icnet.uk - October 27

YesWorld have now launched their Igor Khoroshev page at http://www.nfte.org/Igor.Khoroshev/ put together by webmaster Bryan Jensen, complete with news, a biography and a section to send questions to Khoroshev.

Khoroshev appears on the forthcoming Magna Carta ELP tribute album, playing on "Bitches Crystal", arranged by Trent Gardner, and "The Barbarian", arranged by Robert Berry. He is currently working on his contributions prior to rehearsals with Yes for their next album.

Khoroshev may be doing some soundtrack work for Steve Apicella of Elevator Pictures, Inc. (New York).

Plans to launch the label Young and Hungry Records with Carl Jacobson, are on hold for the time being. Khoroshev is completing two solo project - a solo album with Jacobson and another of solo piano music - which were to have been released by Young and Hungry, but will probably go to existing labels for now.

Charlie Farren's _Greasetown_ is being re-released on to CD with two or three bonus tracks from 1995 with Khoroshev on keyboards.

"Urban Nocturne", one of Khoroshev's pieces for Cakewalk music software, can be heard at his YesWorld site or at the Yeshoo site at http://www.geocities.com/~yeshoo/ikmusic.htm

Khoroshev was interviewed by Keyboard magazine, but the article is currently on hold.

UK/Legacy news from Jobson himself

From: Eddie_Jobson@nowhere! - October 28

[Here's the latest scoop from the man himself, folks!]

Due to the direction the 'Legacy' album has taken during its development, Eddie and John have jointly and amicably decided that John will no longer participate as the singer on the project. As a result of that decision, the album will not be released under the name 'UK'. At the present time, John will still appear on the album on acoustic guitar and bass. Eddie is starting the process of finding the appropriate singer to replace John, and he plans on completing the album as the process permits. Though the loss of John's vocal performances will be a disappointment to many, the overall character and content of the album will remain substantially the same.

The album will be known simply as "Legacy" - The Album - featuring Eddie Jobson, Bill Bruford, Francis Dunnery, Steve Hackett, Tony Levin, John Wetton, The Bulgarian Women's Choir, The City of Prague Philharmonic Strings, (and other musicians to be announced).

Weekday Cartoons

From: "Jan Harris" (wow@bluemarble.net) October 30

My Yes-friend was home sick from work, watching silly stuff and cartoons.

On one cartoon, there was a point where the dwarf needed four key words to get in the gate. In a very slapstick kind of way, he held up an object for each one. Like "brick" and he would hold up a brick (only that wasn't it). Well, one of the words was "Yes" and he held up a YES album, complete with Roger Dean art!

Float your cartoon surprises,
Jan Carol
