March 30, 2008 - Santa Anita Ranch in Tres Pinos, CA

Entered in the "150 Novice" class - use of rein is allowed.
Gabilan Cutters

First cut was a brown cow.
Second cut was this black cow
That's Billy Martin holding the herd
Reins too tight, too hard

Minus one point each for rein, eye appeal
That's Bobby Cotta turning back
There goes the second cow out to the turnback rider who wasn't paying attention
Third cut is another black cow
For an instant I thought this cow was going to run along the fence cuz the turnback rider was quite a bit father back.

But the cow did a 180 and flew back toward the herd. We turned with it, but Ruby didn't fire fast enough to stay in position. Minus 3 points
Overall, we got a 64 score - 4th place out of 8 riders in the 150 Novice class. The judge marked down 3 points for losing working advantage and gave only 1 check (out of 2) for loose rein, amount of courage and eye appeal. I felt our performance was better than the November show where we marked a 67. Ruby probably needed much less rein direction than I was giving her this time, stopped pretty good, went all the way to the fence when necessary, kept pretty good position, had 1 really nice deep cut in the middle of the pen (2nd cow) and 1 pretty nice clean cut off the face of the herd (3rd cow). It was fun! Next show: April 12-13 same beautiful ranch with these same kind of super cattle.
