Luis Perez from Jon Anderson's band

From: artshop@artist-shop.com (ArtShop) Sept 9

The Artist Shop has three new releases on Domo Records. The first is Luis Perez/Tales of Astral Travelers. Yes fans will recognize Luis Perez as a very integral part of Jon Anderson's band for the Deseo and Toltec albums. Mexico City-born Perez has dedicated his life to the study of pre-Columbian musical instruments and the research of the living musical traditions among the ethnic groups of Mexico. With Tales of Astral Travelers, he returns these living artifacts to their original purpose. Mixing modern electronics with sounds not properly heard of for thousands of years, Perez makes history come alive! Perez has toured all over the Americas and has collaborated with artists such as Kitaro, Jackson Browne, Andreas Vollenweider, James Horner, Ed Mann, Ian Underwood, Jon Anderson and Hans Zimmer.

FAQ: Where are they now? (Downes, Rabin, Sherwood, Friends & Relatives album)

From: Henry Potts - Sept 21

The Where Are They Now? site is at http://www.bondegezou.demon.co.uk/wh_now.htm

Trevor Rabin

Rabin did the soundtrack for the film "Armageddon", with Harry Gregson-Williams. Columbia Records released a song companion album, with "Theme from Armageddon" by Rabin, "Animal Crackers" by Diane Warren/Rabin/Gregson-Williams and twelve other tracks (four by Aerosmith). The album has already gone double platinum in the US. A full score release (_Armageddon - The Score_) is to be released by Sony on 10 Nov. It will contain the orchestral score plus some extended versions, for which new guitar work was recorded. The film is at #4 in the UK chart (20 Sep 98) and has just opened in Italy, where its first weekend's takings were the highest ever for an English-language movie.

Rabin has also been working on the film "Jack Frost" (Warner Bros., released 6 Nov in the US), helping star Michael Keaton act as a rock singer, as well as doing the soundtrack and even appearing himself.

Jerry Bruckheimer had asked Rabin to score his new project, "Enemy of the State", but Rabin was initially too busy with "Jack Frost" to oblige. Hans Zimmer was then asked, but he is too busy with "The Thin Red Line" and Rabin is now doing the project.

Rabin will be playing most of the guitars on Wakeman's Return to the Centre of the Earth album and also sings on one track. Wakeman was at Rabin's Jacaranda Room studios in late Aug.

Plans to start recording a new solo album this summer seem to have been delayed again by film work, but Rabin remains keen to press on and has begun at least four songs for the album. Mark Mancina may also be involved on the album. Rabin had put together a live album from his 1989 tour (the Los Angeles show) for release Christmas 1998 by One Way Records, but the label has filed for bankruptcy, so it is unclear what happens now. Rabin remains optimistic the album will come out soon.

Rabin has said that both he and Squire and he and Roger Hodgson would like to work together in the future, but no specific plans exist. Rabin contributed a piece to a classical project led by Steve Morse, described in Howe's section. Anderson is trying to get his solo album, Three Ships, on which Rabin guests, re-released.

Rick Wakeman The most recent solo release is Themes.

Wakeman was recently taken ill with pneumonia - details about his condition were outlined in a release from Nina Wakeman available at Rick Wakeman Communication Centre

Wakeman has signed with EMI Classics to record a double album, Return to the Centre of the Earth, a sequel to Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Recording on the music, which Wakeman has been working on for a few years now, started in Los Angeles and has also involved Trevor Rabin. Patrick Stewart is rumoured to also be involved. Future sessions for the album are being rescheduled following Wakeman's illness, but the planned release date of 18 Jan 1999 remains unchanged. A live performance of the album is planned for London on 16 Jan; Wembley Arena (London) is a possible venue. There will be a second performance in Los Angeles. The performance(s) will probably be televised. Several well-known musicians will guest (probably including Robert Plant), but details have yet to be finalized or announced. The London Symphony Orchestra and the English Chamber Choir, both of which appeared on the original album, are also involved. There will be an accompanying CD-ROM, "Making of Return to the Centre of the Earth". There are also plans for subsequent touring to include Europe, the US (late Spring 1999; probably at least six cities, including San Francisco and New York), Japan, Korea, South America and Australia, with local orchestras and choirs being used.

Wakeman had been planning to record and play some live dates with Mario Fasciano (from Black Knights at the Court of Ferdinand) in Italy in Oct/Nov. Because of his illness delaying work on Return..., these live dates have been cancelled and his involvement on the recording sessions is uncertain; son Adam is taking over the musical director's role for them instead.

Hope Records is undergoing something of a restructuring following earlier financial problems. Origins and The Christmas Album are two projects from Wakeman for the label currently on hold.

Exclusive to BMG is a compilation album of progressive acts taken from King Biscuit releases. The Show That Never Ends: The Best of Progressive Rock - Live from the King Biscuit Vaults includes two tracks from Wakeman's King Biscuit release ("Anne Boleyn", "Catherine Parr"), as well as tracks by ELP, Dixie Dregs, Renaissance, Gentle Giant and Greg Lake. Both Rick Wakeman solo and Wakeman with Wakeman make appearances on the Yes, Friends & Relatives compilation album.

The RWCC currently reports that it is unlikely that Criminal Record, White Rock and No Earthly Connection will be re-released on CD "in the forseeable future"; however, good sales for Return to the Centre of the Earth could change that.

A hymnal by Wakeman and Howard Prior will be available some time. Away from music, Wakeman has been commissioned to write both a novel and a children's book.

Rick on UK TV Next Week

From Bill Eaves (bill.eaves@zetnet.co.uk) Sept 22

This will really only be relevant in the UK, so our friends across the pond please ignore :-(

Rick will be on TV on BBC2 at 8.30pm a week today. I saw a bit of The Antiques Show and at the end it was stated that a certain Rick Wakeman will be on next week, something to do with an antique pen he bought. I am not sure about the pen but the guy certainbly looked and sounded like our Rick :^)

It would be more appropriate had he been on *this* week as they had a beautiful antique Steinway piano which I drooled over. Now if they got Rick a week earlier he could have played it, a piano like that is probably wasted on its current owners whoever they may be :-(

Next week. 8.30 BBC2, please remind me nearer the time as I do not watch TV that much!

Yes on the Beeb
From: Wil & Sue Overton (sue.overton@dial.pipex.com) - Sept 24

Any UK fans might like to know that the BBC2 series Rock Family Trees has a prog rock programme on Friday October 2nd at 11.15pm. How much Yes will be on I don't know but the description in Radio Times (the BBC's listings magazine) quotes Jon talking about Tales (something about wanting to record it in the woods) so it should be fun. I guess we can expect the usual references to dinosaurs etc.

Yes recording in Vancouver 9/26/98

From: allsachord@aol.com (AllsAChord) Sept 26

As I type this I'm listening to an interview/listener call-in with Alan Kovacs CEO and president of Left Banke Mgt and Beyond Music on KLSX radio in Los Angeles. The first call that they took, someone asked him, If Yes presented you with an album of 5 twelve minute songs, would you consider releasing it? Without hesitation Kovacs laughed and responded, "Well, as we speak Yes in in Vancouver with Bruce Fairburn working on 15 minute songs and we're backing them all of the way". There you have it, hot off the wire.

New news

From: RKauff7777 - Sept 28

Back in August I posted a note that YES had been talking to a producer concerning their new album that they were ALL really high on. Bruce Fairbairn IS the guy they were talking about. They had already checked out his studio in Canada and were planning on checking out another studio in Nashville (Don't know if that one had any connection with Fairbairn or not.) when they were near that area at the end of the tour. I'd say from having previously heard this info, the statement by Alan Kovacs on KLSX was probably pretty accurate. I DO also know that Igor is NOT with them right now although I doubt very much that they're recording at this point. From what I heard back then, they were planning on rehearsing together in Hawaii in January and February. I'm guessing that meant they'd record after that. Of course, I have no idea if these plans still stand since we all know how things change with these guys.

From what I know, if they stick to that schedule, Igor IS supposed to be with them then. What I had also wanted to add was that the last thing I had heard was that they were considering using a song that had originally been written for the Fragile album, but was dropped at the last minute.

Rick on TV

From David Sherwood (David.Sherwood@tesco.net) - Sept 26

Just thought you all may like to know, Rick was on our regional TV news program last night (Friday), "Look Northwest". He was a spectator at a vintage sports car rally taking place on the Isle of Man. The event had taken place on Thursday (24/10/98). He was interviewed for about 1 minute, partly because he is an enthusiast and one time racing driver himself, but also because of who he is.

Rick looked very well and was clearly enjoying the cars. He was desperate to have a go! He appeared relaxed and certainly looked his old self.

Yes on Argentina TV

From: Martin Kornick (treasures@interaccess.com) - Sept 21

Just received a video of Yes live from Buenos Aires Argentina, from May 16th 1998. It's a complete concert Pro shot for Argentina TV. From what I understand it was also Argentina's first Television Stereo broadcast! They couldn't have picked a better program to test it out!

This is the song list:
1- Siberian Khatru
2- The rhythm of love
3- America
4- Open your eyes
5- And you and I
6- Heart of the sunrise
7- Steve Howe's solo
8- From the balcony
9- Wonderous stories
10- Igor Khoroshev's solo
11- Long distance runaround
12- The fish n Alan White's solo
13- Owner of a lonely heart
14- The revealing science of God
15- I've seen all good people
16- Roundabout

The picture isn't perfectly clear, but being that Argentina is a third world country you can't expect perfection. The stereo audio is surprising very good though. Other concert videos I have gotten from Argentina have been in mono with flat sound. It's great they have Opened their Ears to YES!!!

There were no interviews during the show but my friend caught a small piece of the Argentine press conference with the "I am Waiting" Talk promo! I've never seen that before.

Rock your world!

Buffalo 66

From: Matthew Powell (mpowell@rsinc.com) - Sept 22

I know that previous posts have talked briefly about this movie, but since I finally saw it last night, I thought I would provide this information:

I only went to it because of the YES music that was involved and because I had heard that the director was a big YES fan. The movie turned out to be very interesting, but dealt with hard-core dark material of family dysfunction that is off the scale, and the effects that it can have on the children's development. It is a low budget movie, almost with a homemade feel to it, which may be intentional. It is definitely in the category of "art movie", which I personally enjoy.

It was easy to see that the director is really into YES, as the movie actually appears to have been built around the music. Almost like he was thinking about this for years: how to use this music in a movie as a vehicle for the message (which is, I believe, once you wade through the horror of the main character's distorted psychology due to the big-time intense emotional abuse he suffered growing up at the hands of his parents, who themselves are psychologically disturbed, that there is always "hope" in life that one can use to motivate themselves to more positive circumstances. The YES music provides the spectre of hope in spectacular fashion). In the credits, he thanks Jon Anderson & YES.

Check out this cast line-up (my guess is they appeared as a favor to the director):

Angelica Houston
Mickey Rourke
Roseanna Arquette
Jan-Michael Vincent (remember him?)
Ben Gazzara
Kevin Pollack
Alex Karras
Vincent Gallo

The YES music does not appear until the end, which, compared to the soundtrack throughout the previous part of the movie, suddenly occurs in truly epic fashion, and in such rich tone, that the contrast is like the Chipmunks vs. Beethoven's 9th. There are 2 uses of it:

1st) during the climax of the movie, when the lead character enters a sleazy strip club, and in surreal fashion, "Heart of the Sunrise" comes in during Chris' amazing bass solo in the beginning. The juxtaposition of this incredible music excerpt with what is being experienced in the movie is truly phenomenal. Then, right when all seems lost, as the apogee to a life of misery and true emotional pain, comes...:

2nd) the ending, which is the first moment of any kind of happiness or hope after 1 1/2 of sheer living hell. And because of Jon's truly heavenly voice and artistic spirit, this entire denouement is accomplished with only a still photograph and the song "Sweetness" (this should relay the intensity of YES' music: that a movie could be concluded with only a still photograph). The emotion and joy that is conveyed in the song, and that moment, is profoundly inspirational. And to think YES (or Jon) wrote this song way back on their first album, in 1969. The experience is like running a marathon across the desert without drinking any liquid for 24 hours, just to get a cup of Gatorade at the end, making the Gatorade seem like heaven itself.

Kudos to Vincent Gallo.

Downes & Banks

New Trevor Rabin Song

From Thomas (TRB2388@aol.com) - Sept 28

If you go to www.hardradio.com and then go to the "hard news" section you'll see Trevor listed as one of the guitarists to contribute a track to the new Merry Axemas 2 album. As everyone probably guessed it's an album full of guitar versions of Christmas Carols. The newsclip didn't mention exactly what song Trevor would be doing or when the cd will be coming out. But I am sure it will be soon, as the holiday music cd's start hitting the stores in Oct.

Yes on Rock Family Trees. (...again)

From: brian_neeson@solectron.co.uk - Sept 29

...still don't know if this is a Premiere. (11.15pm Friday BBC2) Someone else has a copy, but did not see it on TV. Martin suggests that we check the copyright date at the end of the show.

COPYRIGHT!!!
You mean we're not supposed to tape this stuff? I don't think I'll take Martin's advice - I'll just check the haircuts! I just heard Robert Fripp declined to take part, but accepted a framed copy of the KC Family Tree.

I am told the following are taking part in the programme. Jon Anderson, Rick Wakeman, Bill Bruford, Chris Squire, Keith Emerson & Carl Palmer. ....and a reminder that Rick is on Antiques Roadshow tonight 8.30pm BBC2.

Mail from Steve!

From: Howe NOTTLSSCGBI (glen.paul@rl.telia.no) - Sept 30

In february I sent an e-mail to the Steve Howe page "Rondo", with some questions and comments. Today I got a personal answer in my mail-box!

You can read one of my questions - and Steve's answer - on his page at NFTE/Steve Howe.

The page has just been updated, so it should be interesting anyway.

Thanks Steve!

Rick on tv

From: Phil Bradley (philb@twilight.demon.co.uk) - Sept 30

I managed to catch Rick on the Antiques programme last night. It was a brief segment, and he was talking about some special pen worth about 15,000 UKP with considerable enthusiasm.

I thought he'd be brought in as a 'pen expert' but my wife thought that the pen was his and he was selling it.

The most exciting point though was that he used it to title a sheet of music as, you guessed it, Return to the Centre of the Earth, and then signed it! Now, *that's* a piece of paper I'd like to have!

New Web Site and Yes Chat

From: Casey Van Tieghem (vantieghem@ixpres.com) - Sept 30

I would like to plug a new web page, it's really cool.

It's called YesBritProg . There is a live chat room there, and I'm starting a discussion list, you can enroll in the list there. I kicked myself off the Wakeman list for discussing Yes too much, now I'm thinking of kicking myself off the Southside list for discussing Keith Emerson too much.

So this list is for Yes fans only (No Yes bashers please!), who want to discuss freely any topic related to Yes, British Progressive Rock, the equipment they use etc.. So far nobody is on the list, and I'm not sure how to post to it. We'll figure that out eventually I guess.

I also am going to try to put that Yes.mid file up there, so people can download it. It's kind of a parody of the lineup changes.

I usually log in around 6pm pacific time, and I might visit that chat room if people let me know they are going to log on. Anyone with a little more savy on Listbot might be able to help me get this started.

I must stress that I am not doing this out of spite to any members, I love you all, I enjoy the humor, and rediculous posts, as well as at length discussions of Moog synths etc.

This is a great group, but I would like to try an alternative.

Just follow the link below, and you will see a form on the Web page. If you dont' have a java enabled browser, or you use Juno or Web TV or some non-standard browser (I hate to promote Microsoft like that), let me know, mabye I could enlist for you.

I will be including my signature which has the link, but this is my last plug.
