New accommodations at the Eddy Ranch - over-grown paddock

September 28, 2008

Buster has been sparring with the horse next to him in his 12x24 stall and banging his head on the low metal overhang, scraping up his face on a regular basis, so when this super large paddock opened up, we took it. All the bushes in this paddock were real overgrown and necessitated a lot of trimming. These pictures are the "before."

Buster's only neighbors are Eve (with the white blaze) and the very old Arabian broodmare, Marusa.

This paddock is the highest point of the developed part of the ranch, and from here, Buster can see everything that's going on.

Barely visible is the in-gate just off to the left of center in this picture.

Not sure what these weeds are--we call them tick-weed, for obvious reasons--but Buster thought they were tasty.

In the center of the paddock is this little barn. The previous occupant had several toys that were left behind tied to the trees and bushes.

The in-gate.

This is a loose pipe panel that is tied to a deteriorating wood fence. Note all the space under the bottom rail--not the safest conditions for a young horse.

The automatic waterer was turned off. We discovered when we turned it on that it leaked badly, so we had to use water buckets instead of the waterer.

Eve is not a very friendly mare (to other horses). She is old and has been lame for at least a couple of years. A week after Buster was moved into this paddock, Eve foundered badly and was put down.

Buster only lived in this paddock for two weeks. After Eve was put down, the ranch moved Marusa down with the other horses, and Buster, who was then very lonely, got moved back down to a stall next to Marusa, who had become his buddy.
