Joyner maintained contact with the colt by being his trainer from ages 2 through 5 when he raced overseas. Whisk Broom II's American trainer was James Rowe Sr. the most notable of Whisk Broom II's European victories was the Victoria Cup, which he won at age 5 while carrying 128 pounds. In this country, Whisk Broom II became the first New York Handicap Triple Crown winner. He won the Metropolitan under 126 pounds, the Brooklyn under 130 in track record time, and the Suburban under 139.
